Solved Who can I contact if my legal Windows 7 key is blocked from activation

Hi Noel,

I trust you can see this MGADIAG report Ok.

I'm a bit confused as to the advice I'm getting and the dates people replied! I'm also now to using forums which doesn't help.

Thanks

Jim

*****-*****-74XYM-BH4JX-XM76F is the defauly.

You will have to find your actual key somehow. If you can't read the sticker, another way is to mount an image and get it from the registry. That assumes you have an image/shadow copy/registry backup from a time when it was activated.

Hi SIW2,
Thanks for your post. Yes, I suspect I am screwed for some reason. The only image I've got is the repair drive which is on a stick. Maybe the product key still there, buried under a landslide of encryption.

Not being an IT expert, I imagined that if I cloned my Windows (I think I used Acronis) to make a repair disk per Microsoft instructions, that I would have an exact copy of everything on my C: drive, which I assumed would have the product key information that would keep Microsoft happy.

This has all taken me fruitless weeks, for which I can only blame myself. Why Microsoft would bother about systems running Windows 7 at this stage eludes me.
If it stops working, I'll just have to buy a Mac.
Cheers
Jim

Well, I couldn't resist it, but used ShowKeyPlus and when I used it to open the backup on my repair USB stick, it found the product key that is on my Windows 7 printed label.

Maybe Microsoft got touchy at one stage, and happy again since? I don't know.
I'll post again if I get more crap from them, otherwise let's consider the problem has gone away.

Hi SIW2,

I tried again this morning, no joy.

I am looking forward to the end of my grace period, give or take a few re-arms. I'm also preparing to put "Kubuntu" onto my PC as a boot option & see how that plays out.

I really appreciate the effort you people put in to trying to sort out Windows problems. Judging by the number of threads and posts, there are a lot of confused folk out here!

Actually, judging by the number of files I've discovered that make up Windows, I'm surprised it works at all! Every day without some glitch is a good one!

Having said all that, I'd still be interested in solving the activation issue, even of it was only via a friendly Microsoft mole.

Cheers

If that is the key off the sticker, then it should activate. Now you know what the key is,you could try ringing the MS toll free number

Hi Torchwood & SIW2,

I reinstalled using an ISO created at the time.

I will try kb971033 as suggested.

I see from the web that a lot of people are finding the same as me, that when I spoke to a Microsoft agent, he told me they could no longer activate Windows 7.

So I suspect it will all come down to what havoc is wreaked on my PC at the end of their 30-days and however many re-arms I can use. If the PC can still run Finale and Reaper off-line, so be it.

If anything comes of the kb971033 trial, I will post. I may be able to get a valid key from the local tip!

Regards

Jim

I followed the links but I get error 8024 4004 "Windows could not search for new updates" and I felt the whole thing is slipping away from me.

I used "Showkey" and found a different key to the one on my Windows OEM label which slmgr installed Ok and told me I had 30 days to activate. I then used slmgr /ato to try and activate the key but got a message back saying the key is blocked.

I think slmgr must "talk" to the Microsoft activation server to do this.

Trying the kb971033 link, will post after reboot.

I checked the update link as suggested via kb971033 , ran the .msi, rebooted twice (why I don't konw) anyway, ran slmgr /ato and it still says the product key is blocked.

Look when you're up the creek, the easiest thing is to go off and wait the 30 days, and if Windows 7 falls to pieces, get a Mac. Or a Linux OS. Anything rather than goofing around with Microsoft and their "Registry" !

Thanks for all the help, it has been an interesting experiment.

when I spoke to a Microsoft agent, he told me they could no longer activate Windows 7.

That is the first I have heard of it.

Plenty of people fresh installing win 7 all the time. Many are also installing win 7 on new hardware with intel and amd latest processors. MS still activate vista.

Well, I trawled through Sevenforums and came across instructions for phone activation.
It said type slui.exe 4 in the Start menu, which I did, and within a couple of seconds, a popup said Activation was successful.

I've been disappointed before, and fully expect crap when I switch on again tomorrow morning.

Found it :)

The installed Product Key is the Default Key for Home Premium - and can therefore never be activated.

The machine is based on a retail motherboard, and would require either an OEM_COA key or a Retail one

You need to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker or from the Retail package.

You can do this easily, using the option of the System Properties page

Hi Roy,

I'm finding it hard to keep up, and don't know what "WAT" means - sorry"! Also, do you mean me to create a new image (ISO) as of today?

In the meantime while I figure out how I created the ISO file in the first place (I have an 18-page Word file where I've noted details of all the steps suggested), this morning at the risk of leaking all sorts of information, Belarc Advisor tells me that the Windows 7 Software Licence WW848-xxxxx-xxxxx etc which is on my Windows label, is present and correct in the machine.

I'm kind of guessing that at some point between using the USB stick to repair Windows, and getting the OS Running again, Microsoft somehow got wind of the change and temporarily didn't like it.

Anyway, I didn't see any "This copy of windows is not genuine" notice this morning, and while I don't want to annoy you, I'll leave creating an new ISO until I get more complaints from Microsoft. If so, I'll post here.

Thanks to everybody for your help.

Jim

Hi Snick,

Thanks for that. After 24 hours, I still haven't had any kick-back from Microsoft, but then again, I have no idea if it my PC that talks to them, or if their server takes its time to check all the billions of product codes they must have at this stage.

It beats me why they had to use so many alphanumeric characters though. I've heard of future-proofing but that beats everything. Anyway, not really relevant I guess. Presumably there is a matching hardware code built into my motherboard. I must go online and have a look, and take a backup while I'm at it.

Regards
Jim
