Spare parts or to repair.

+1 to that!

This causes occasional problems, involving exponentially larger collection of PC/Lappy parts, in inverse proportion to storage capacity.:(

Solution: visit to E bay or similar sites.:D

Tearful farewell to parts which one is bound to require in week after sale.

(Sigh!)

Would not call myself a "Techie" either, I am mostly self-taught. Apologies if I sounded offhand, but my computing experience developed after disability forced a change of track from being a workshop foreman in a large garage. Over a few years and some hard lessons (some expensive) I learned that it is a good idea to keep a stock of parts, some from old builds and some gained second hand. That led to a situation whereby I am unable to pass up a "bargain", on the principle that I may need that particular item. Someday. Maybe. There are times when the amount of PC stuff is too much and I have a "clear out." Often I find that I subsequently need a part that I have just disposed of.

From conversations with other PC users, it seems that many of them share these circumstances. My son, for example, cannot bear to part with several old PC's, mostly half-stripped, which he willl never use again.

I don't know exactly what you are referring to concerning the floods and typhoons, but I do not believe that even I would be tempted to buy flood-damaged PC parts!

There may be usable parts in defective PC's or laptops, providing that the price was right and the system was not too old, I would consider buying. There are people who buy damaged laptops, for example. They then create a working machine from one or more inoperative ones, and sell them on.

Hope that answers your question, which was a good one, made me think.
