Why does Windows 7 Repair disk never seem to repair anything?

I have run the Win 7 repair cd several times and the message always comes back that the repair disk could not fix the problem. What is it good for?

My installation goes down for apparently no reason-- earlier or later the same day a blue screen will happen and the Win 7 repair mode kicks in.

But the original question stands? What does the Win 7 repair disk ever do? At least the XP repair routine
actually did a repair on occasion and the MBR could be fixed etc.

For me the Win 7 repair has always worked and fixed the issue(s).
The issue is usually caused by me screwing around with disk structure / partitions.

If by "blue screen" you mean BSOD, that's not what I've had to deal with, so you have a different problem.
There is a SF BSOD sub-forum with experts that can help with that:
BSOD Help and Support - Windows 7 Help Forums

Here is the BSOD posting instructions:

The problem apparently does not come from the Windows system itself but from a program that you installed later. And that is an unknown by the repair disk. That happens typically if you have a corrupted .dll that was brought in by a program.

The dll issue at least makes some kind of sense.

After my initial post, the auto repair routine within the OS ran and suggested a System Restore (which I've done often in XP) and a normal boot followed.

Thanks for the lead on Win7 BSOD problems. I'll look at that material.

The current install is on an older drive which I don't know if there's a bad sector issue. Crystal Disc info gives it a "Caution" and I used HDD Guru Low Level Format Tool to prep the surface for any errors it could handle before the Win7 installation.

My questions may sound primitive but some of us have only moved off of XP.

That is no problem. Better late than never. Fortunately you moved to the best Windows there ever was. Moving away from here will be the real challenge.

Good decision to move to win7.

You can make a better repair disc if you run this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/05bo4rs1k2rg9p9/A23.zip?dl=0

Download the .zip file . Rt click it>properties>Unblock>Apply>Ok.

(You need to do that on win7 if the file came from another machine) It only takes a second, you will get the hang of it. )

Unzip it directly to your drive eg. C:\A23

Then just rt click and run as adminstrator on the run-me-as-admin.cmd. It will make a much better repair disc for you.

@Wolfgang,

You are welcome run it as well and let me know what you think. It is different from anything you have seen before.

I take it WinCMD is the exe file to run from the folder. Can this be run from the CD drive?
And why is it not an ISO which would run from the cd drive like a repair disk?

Also another oldish question-- will make new subject if you need it-- about msconfig.

What is used in Win7 for MSCONFIG? A search box try gives only something from 2005 and that does not complete-- says msconfig.ex_ (underscore.)

I have something left over from a program uninstall that keeps popping up at Win7 startup and suspect something in the startup file which remained from the use of Revo Uninstaller. I thought Revo had gotten everything.

My bad, I have reread further down to see it has to be run at the root drive.

Will see how that goes. Still I want to know why no ISO to run for really bad problems (?)

The system repair disk attempts to fix a number of potential problems and certainly does not always work. It does give you direct access to command line utilities. For example if you a reasonably sure that you have a boot problem then "bootrec" can be used if repeated startup repairs fail. The ultimate fixit beyond that is using a reliable system image restore using the system repair disk if using Windows inbuilt imaging.

I did run the suggested repair routine and saw at conclusion that it offers to make an ISO cd. Very handy and thoughtful.

But my msconfig problem remains. How to I get to msconfig for Win7?

Alternately I may be able to fix my problem by simply deleting a stored file (the pesky ddl mentioned which would interfere with startup? unknown) to solve the problem.
