Why is copying data between my 2 computers VERY slow?

Yes, you should be seeing speeds nearing 10 megabytes per second...not 600KB/s.

Do both computers speed test at expected speeds to the Internet? Or is one signfiicantly faster to the Internet than the other?

It relates to a compression feature in Windows 7. You could give that a try and let me know if it makes a difference.

No, turning it off didnt make any difference.

A silly question on my part: Did you reboot after making the change?

Do you have any Firewlls or Antivirus running


Like i said ... these anti virus can be a pain in the *** and sometimes they lke to scan files as they leave and come in the network... so if yoursending files, and its scanning that could be a big slow down.

Look on the cable your using to connect...

What CAT does it say 3, 5, 5e, 6?

One is Cat 5e the other is CAT6. Each are only a few feet long.

Difficult to say - I only have on monitor so I have to do logmein.com to get at the old WinXP machine. But even via logmein.com the WinXP machine runs at a dowload of 6.9 and upload of 0.35. (compared to the Win7 machine's 7.2 and 0.37)

Yes, and I'm sticking around here waiting to hear back as to whether both computers benchmark to the Internet about the same. That will say about duplex and speeds, network drives and cables.

I wasn't trying to be rude, just correcting the terminology as it's important to keep bits and bytes sorted during these chats to ensure that we aren't arguing semantics rather than an actual problem.

FWIW, I am using Avira on my Win7 machine (apparently Kasperky cripples Internete Explorer for some reason), and AVG on the WindowsXP machine.

Btw, do any of you guys have an strong recommendations/opinions (preferably based personal experience of different AV software!) on for what AntiVirus software to use that does not slow down one PC too much?

Btw, no offence but I wish the F*** people would give up quoting BITS when talking about communication speeds. The general public thinks in terms of BYTES not bits.

I checked around the Intel site and apparently there are some very recent update for your Gigabyte network adaptor which came out on Dec. 12. They are supposed to help with Windows 7 network speeds from what I could read about them.

You can download them in the link below. The Windows 7 drivers are right at the top of the page.

Ok...so you are getting around 7 megabits per second to the internet. That's most likely limited by your internet connection...but that comes out to roughly 875,000 bytes per second.

When you are transferring files between the two machines, are you using machine names or TCP/IP addresses which are internal on the network? I just am trying to make sure that you aren't in any going out of your network to your ISP and then coming back.

then when you start to explain why a hard drive loose gigs when you format... that's alot of math for the average user *lol*

theres alot of peole out there that you still have to convince them that 2 + 2 does equal 4

It's not hard at all, although it could be slightly most difficult if you don't follow directions. Those drivers should help. The simple way is usually the best way.

This is what updated drivers are for by the way, to fix these sorts of problems.
