Why is defraging so slow?

I'm using Defraggler and it's taking forever to defrag, b4 i used to use Auslogics Disk Defrag and it was way faster.

What size hdd you got?
My 1tb hdd takes forever when its fragmented using perfect disk.
Even like a weekly defrag takes quite long for me

MY HDD size is 683 GB. I defrag my hard drive whenever i have time. ususally once a week at least depending how bad it is. IDK y I switched to Defraggler, maybe because of this " When Defraggler reads or writes a file, it uses the exact same techniques that Windows uses. Using Defraggler is just as safe for your files as using Windows. "

Defragging a disk will take time due to two factors I believe. One - Moving files around on the disk so it isn't fragmented, but in most defragmenting cases, they also have to move the files one more time to 'compact' the free space so that there is less gaps to make make fragmented files.

Look at Defragmenting as you taking a pile of papers and organizing them logically, first by putting papers in piles relevant to content. But do you normally just leave piles of paper sitting around? No, you take those piles and you also organize them to one place. The problem with the second part though, is you can just grab pile one, stack with pile two and so forth, you look at the piles and go, "This goes here first... Then this one next." In the case of the computer though, it has to take those piles and do them by pages instead of giant piles. I know, not very efficient in the simplistic view, but then again, you have a desk and free movement to do that, the computer only has a simple pipeline and has to do things methodically.

Does any defragger takes advantage of muti core? Also is there any point defragging a USB stick?

Well we all know the bigger the hard drive and the more you have on it will increase the time. Your hard drive in a week will probably not be very fragmented with W7. I would choose the one that is the fastest. I would suggest try using the W7 built in defragger it works as good as anything I have tried. Go to start. type disk and you will see it there. I first do a disk clean up, (you will also see it there). Pick your disk and analyze, it will show how fragmented you disk is and you can decide what to do from there. My 300 gig is seldom over 2% fragmented in a two week period.

Defrag after many installs, uninstalls and / or 4 times a year.

The last time i used the W7 defragger, it took forever i think. Thats why i prefer 3rd party defragger because they have auto shutdown.

To defrag the C:, use following command at an elevated command prompt:
Contig -s -q

Now to do that you need to :
1. Download contig.exe
Contig
and
2. Now after unzipping, I suggest moving contig.exe to \windows\system32 to make your life easier.
3. Now go an elevated command prompt.
4. Run following: CONTIG C: -Q -S
The -q says quiet, -s says recurse thru subfolders.

No defragging program will make use of multi-core processors. There is no 'processing' that needs to be done, it is pure disk I/O moving. Short of having a top of the line Disk controller (Like Next Generation) and Top of the line hard disks, you will not see an improvement on speed because the limitation is based on Disk Read/Writes. Third party or the default program are limited to just that, Disk I/O ability which is controlled by the disk Controller and the Hard Disk's ability to do that.

Flash memory has only so many read/write cycles before it (theoretically) stops working. Defragging is read/write intensive.

isn't SSD consider as flash memory or something?
