Why is MS offering an Update for Office 2010 if one does not have it

On every machine I have gone on that has either office 2003 or 2007, Microsoft is offering a security update for Office 2010. Does anyone know why?
Now we know MS is not supporting office 2003 anymore but why give this update?
and I just saw it on 2 of my clients computers that have office 2007- duh?

From scenario three in the above link,

Office updates target every product in which a component was included.

Windows Update or Microsoft Update offer updates for products that are not installed on the computer

I have 2007 myself and was offered the update too, it installed with no ill effects.

I have never been able to understand why some people spend time deciding what update to install & what not to. Then some way down the track wonder why an update caused a problem which may well have been caused by hiding an earlier update that this subsequent update may need to install properly. I always & have always installed all the updates applicable for my computer from MS & have never had a problem.

If you received a notice from your car maker that a recall is needed for your model, to fix a safety issue or something serious would you decide that you know more than the manufacturer & not have the recall attended to.

I think that MS would know a lot more about what issues might confront my OS than I would, particularly concerning its security or system flaws that need to be updated or fixed.

When you installed the Microsoft Office File Validation (OFV) Add-in...
(which should show up in Programs and Features)
...you were blessed with the ability to validate* Office 2010 files too.
(without being told that you were getting this feature)

*check for malicious Office files

Those OFV files have an original date of 14 Jan 2011...
...then there was a patch for them about later that year:
...the patch was labeled for 2010 KB2553065
...but at least the "Applies to" section mentions Office 2007:

...which is also labeled for 2010
...but the "Applies to" section does not mention Office 2007 :-(

To figure some of this out (just for you
...I installed Office 2007 (no service pack).

Then installed Office 2007 SP3 and checked for updates.

I was offered these updates and the OFV Add-in:

Now to my 2 cents using my 3 brain cells.

Microsoft to the best of my knowledge never gives every exact detail of any update.
My belief is they give the basics what a update is for. If they post the exact reason and all the code changes ect. it would take volumes and who is going to read and understand all of them. Maybe the hackers.
One has to put some trust in Microsoft's decision on what system needs what.

Yes at times Microsoft makes a mistake but seldom. If a mistake is made it fixed quickly.
Considering a 100 million plus computers are updated in this fashion I would say their batting average is excellent.

After watching many, many Update problems fixed by Noel, Golden, Tom and others I have come to the conclusion that most Update problem come from a system having a problem before the Updates were installed.

I keep a close watch on any driver updates and choose if I want them.
I don't except any Bing.
I download and install all others and have no problems on two computers.

I would suggest one has to put some trust in a company you had enough trust to install their operating system.

I got this one as well and installed, even though on this Windows 8 Notebook I have 2007, but the other machines here have 2010 installed and as they're all networked didn't see any reason not to install it.

Would it hurt MS to say something like, "The update will fix this xxxxx when you do this yyyyy." The jibber-jabber they do post is of no help for the 100 million people who have a right to know why they are trusting (A very big corporation who care little about us) MS to install.

I do agree Gary. What Microsoft does give for information is as useless as nipples on a sidewalk. I don't think they are going to change.

I don't always research an update before installing it. I usually put them all in and see if anything breaks. If it does break something, then I might go hunting for the reason.

I've only applied all of the latest round of updates to two W7 computers. They both lost some the same two Windows Explorer detail view columns (Owner & Attributes). It was not a big deal to select the columns again - then apply to all folders... so I've not attempted to figure out which update (and/or software combo?) did that.

And i saw the explanation above, but then microsoft shoukd at least tell us in the description, like this is a update that fits into office 2007 or office 2003 and is needed because.................
Then at least i know when i install it i am not going to tear my hair out if the office program does nor not open.

Yeah, I guess there really isn't a sufficient answer to that particular question.

I doubt Microsoft is going to chime in here, so the rest of us just post opinions based on information gathered.

I thought the info I found would be useful, was to me anyway.

I have no idea why they can't explain what each update is and does in layman's terms, or why they title an update that would potentially confuse the end user.

I never have problems with updates so I accept the updates offered for my machines and move on.

Obviously, other's do have problems, we have a sub-forum full of them.
