Why my portable hdd does not work on desktop but works on laptop?

Hi,
i am having troble in connecting my portable hard disk to my desktop but it is working fine on my laptop.....
Please help.

I have connected this hdd in every ports available in my desktop.
It doset even shows up on diskmangement or anywhere.
But when i connect to a laptop it works perfectly..

If with the same cable, it works on your laptop, then it is not a problem with the cable.

Do other external drives show up on your desktop?

also I have connected this to my cousins desktop running xp and it dosent show up

I think it is the problem with the cable because it cannot draw enough power from this usb..

Have you tried a pen drive? Pendrives do not draw much power.

yes,pen drives works fine. But now when i connected to my friend's computer it is working.... but not with my computer.my friend is having a pc with gigabyte motherboard and amd proccesor
is this the problem with my PC???????

And so, the current situation is that Flash drives work on your Desktop.

Only external Hard Disk drives be it the Verbatim drive or any other external Hard Disk drive does not work.

Am I right?

In that case, it could well be a power issue in that your desktop USB ports are unable to supply adequate power to the HDDs.

You may try a Y cable (one end of the cable having two USB plugs) plugging in the two USB plugs into the desktop and check whether it resolves the problem.

Is this the problem with my SMPS....? i am using a little bit old smps....?

Can't say for sure. You may take it to a computer shop and ask them to change to a better SMPS and with that your problem is resolved, you may buy a new SMPS. It could be a problem with the motherboard also. Only a trial by substitution can diagnose and pinpoint such hardware problem/deficiency.

But first try with a Y cable.

What is your power supply make and wattage as apart from the cable it's possible your power supply isn't sufficient to supply enough power once you connect more peripherals to your PC
