Why so many crashes with Win7 x64?????

The internet and help forums are LITTERED left and right with people having problems with Win7 x64 crashing. Is this OS that fickle? Will Microsoft ever get the kinks out of 64-bit Windows?I long for the stability and reliability of XP Pro!!!!!!!

Seriously, though, any insight into this would be great.

I've been using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 for 15 months now and never had a crash....ever.

Please don't take this wrongly but you can't believe all you read on the Internet.

There are literally MILLIONS of w7 x-64 installations in daily use that NEVER crash.

XP in its early days was definitely a "bit of a dog" too.

Most crashes are caused by

1) Bad user operation == fiddling around with registry or other hacks or changing control panel settings without knowing what is really being changed

2) Mal / spy/ other Bad ware that gets installed when people download stuff from torrent / warez sites / other dubious sources.

3) Poorly written application software that doesn't confirm to Windows requirements

4) Programs attempting to bypass standard Windows API and addres hardware directly - these days the overhead of using the API compared with addressing the hardware directly is very small and on modern machines with fast processors and specilaized graphics / chipsets.

I've run W7 X-64 on a LOT of machines and the only crash I had was when an old (and I mean REALLY old Analog only) TV tuner card screwed up something.

Wow, Golden, I'm envious. I've been dealing with various crashes from the very start, since November. :banghead: I've reinstalled, clean reinstalled, updated some drivers and BIOS, disabled fax modem and wireless card drivers (don't use), run all kinds of hardware tests (no problems on Linux, same machine), don't overclock, don't mess with registry, etc. etc. etc. Just running basic applications like browsers, comodo firewall, revo uninstaller, whatever I had on XP before.

I've been trying to get some help for a while now (see previous threads) but none of the solutions proposed has helped. I just wish I knew what to do to fix this without having to try XP Pro.

Jimbo, as far as I can tell, I don't think I have any of the issues you listed. I've even gotten crashes when reinstalling OS with factory.wim image, no other additions or modifications. I appreciate your insights though. Thanks!

It sounds like it may be some kind of a hardware issue. I was having multiple crashes I could not explain or fix too. I ended up with a new mobo and CPU and I've not had a problem since.

I'm sure you've run Memtest Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool and tried other programs to help you chase down your problems.

Thanks WartHog. Yes, I've run all those kinds of tests-several times. Does the fact that I have no crashes whatsoever in the same machine with Linux on 2nd hdd indicate it's likely not something like the mobo or cpu (unless the Win7 hdd is to blame)?

Windows 7, 64 bit constantly crashes. I get a WksSb.exe - System Error which reads, "WkWbl.dll is missing..."

Firstly, let me qualify this by saying that I am a 64-bit user, and have been since Vista first came out.

I can honestly say I am happy, 64-bit computing is really coming into it's own, and I personally look forward to the day when people actually start writing 64 bit versions of their program, rather than the situation as it is now, when they don't bother becaue "32 bit works just as well on a 64 bit system" Although I will be the first to admit, I had no end of problems with 64 Bit Vista at first, but that wasn't down to the OS, it was down to lazy hardware manufacturors, who couldn't be bothered to get off their a**es and write 64 bit drivers.

The thing you have to remember, is that generally, Human Being's are moaners. Very rarely do we take the time to say that everything is great. Browsing the internet, and in particular support forums, can lead you to have a very disjointed view. The very nature of these places is that people only post when they have a problem. Millions of users, who never have a problem just don't bother. You never hear from them, and why? Simply because they have no need for a support forum, because they don't need support.

I have been using windows 7 quiet sometime now...say 14 mos...no problem what so ever have i encountered with it..been using it since...i dont understand why people say they have hard time with this OS...most probable solution to your problem......is change the owner.....not the OS

Nice solution, rbeldua, very constructive. How you can say that it's time to change the owner when I actually like Win7 and have tried for MONTHS now to fix the crashes is beyond me. Why don't YOU tell me why I don't get crashes in Linux Mint-must be the terrific owner!?!:roflmao:

severedsolo and others-Thanks for your posts. It's encouraging to hear so many GOOD experiences with Win7 x64. I agree it would be great if everyone would get on board with 64-bit computing, especially manufacturers. In the meantime, I'm still stuck with trying to figure out why I get all these different types and random crashes-

WartHog-Dumb question: do you mean switching the data cables on the drives? I'm willing to try it.

Anyone: can any BSOD hunters out there look at my earlier BSOD info and see if there are any other drivers that should be updated or disabled? How do I know if I need a new mobo or CPU?

BSODs are almostly caused by outdated software and bad drivers, it not Microsoft fault but its the fault of the user for installing such software which cause BSODs. XP≠Win7

Thanks, yowanvista. Here's the link to my latest thread with dump files attached and pic of monitor screen during another crash. I followed Dean's instructions, but still get crashes. No BSOD's lately, just crazy lines (see pic) and black screen rebooting computer. I'll do whatever it takes as long as I can fix this thing
