Why Windows Blue heralds the death of the desktop

Not everyone has a smart phone. I don't and I do not own a tablet and never will. It is correct to say that more and more people access the net with portable devices. That being said MS should be looking out for ALL of their customers not just those that use tablets and smart phones. Their attitude may come back and bite them where it hurts.

after thorough reading of previous opinions, I couldn't say less or more on agreeing them. I just can't imagine a desktop PC with those tiles thingy around my desktop.

Microsoft wants a big part of the mobile market. I don't blame them at all. I think is great they make a operating system to help them do just that. I think we all understand that the Toymobile market is billions of dollars and growing. The competition in the Toymobile market is tough. I wish Microsoft well in the new and growing market.

NOW why does Microsoft have to treat a market of hundreds of million PC users they have 90% plus market coverage like something the cat dragged in the door?

I would venture to say that millions and millions of PC users also have Tablets and Cell Phones and other Toymobiles. I don't believe the users of such Toymobiles will have a problem with Windows 8 (TM) Edition on those kind of products. (TM=Toymobile)

I would also venture to say that people would have no problem using a PC with a true PC operating system like Windows 7 or a Windows 8(PC) Edition.

I do not in any way understand why Microsoft thinks they have to abandon one market in order to join another market. That to me is what they are doing when they made a Toymobile operating system for use on a PC.

Well, I am on a fixed income and I cannot afford a tablet or a smart phone. I am using a perfectly good PC with Windows 7 on it and I plane on using it for a long long time.

Gary I fully understand your position. I don't have any Toymobiles. I do wish goodwill to those who want those things.

I like you have chose PC. Some choose Toymobiles and then again their are some people that choose PC's and Toymobiles.
Just give a good choice what operating system to put on what piece of hardware.
To me that choice can and should be given from Microsoft to it customers. We have the desire and capability of making such a choice.
I'm not sure if the rulers of the E.U. will understand this free choice thing.

Very much doubt that unless all the software you need can run with a variant of Linux. I need the Adobe stuff so that's not really an option. But, and this is what M$ seems unable to appreciate, my W7 rig (along with several million other users) is running just fine. Not interested in a few seconds faster boot time although that wasn't my experience when I was 'testing' W8 and/or cloud computing and/or downloading paid for apps. So I'll just stay as I am and revisit when M$ wakes up.

You can run The Gimp and as far as Adobe , they are moving towards a cloud application. Most of Europe already is om Linux.

Most programs are compatible with Linux, especially open source software which appreciates desktop operating systems.

I'm with Gary on this because I, too, am an old geek and am not going to change to this childish toy which MS are pushing.

I've tried it and just cannot see any sense in what MS are trying to accomplish in pushing it to desktop users. Win8 is sitting in a dual boot setup on my machine and just never gets used any more. One of these days I will wipe it, take my loss and install Linux instead.

I'm running Linux in a VM, although, I would prefer to dual boot with Linux since my hardware isn't exactly the best for running a VM with ease, but I'm afraid of the complications between GRUB and the Windows Boot Manager.

I used the Mint Windows Installer and it worked perfectly - installed onto a separate partition although I know from the Linux forums it has been a bit hit & miss - guess I got lucky. It kept the Windows Boot Manager in place

Gimp is a good program by all accounts but there is nothing that can touch InDesign in the open source world. Just cannot get my head round trusting Cloud. Got a few confidentiality agreements in place so not sure how they would stack up

I'm still happy with Windows 7, and would prefer to continue with Windows since it's the operating system I've grown up with, but when support ends for Windows 7 in 2020, and Microsoft still haven't developed a desktop operating system which seems to very likely, then I'm going to switch to Linux entirely.

Think that will be the case with many W7 users. Hopefully though it will still be possible to install W7 on new hardware especially that UEFI (or whatever it's called) bios.

Windows 7 will still support the new hardware, I've seen old XP systems being to run Windows 7, so I don't see why not the reverse can be true.

With the power of laptops my next move would probably be a well spec'd model hooked up via HDMI to an external monitor. So would be looking to upgrade a probably pre-installed W8 laptop with W7. Would no doubt need to do my homework to make sure on the hardware compatibility route first.

Maybe M$ will see sense before then!!!!! LOL
