wifi adapter slow to load at startup

I'm using win7 starter on a notebook.

Every time I begin from a fresh windows installation the wifi loads quickly and works fine.
Then as a few months pass loading slows down and connecting too..

I'm using the notebook when travelling and connect to different hotspots during a day:hotal, cafe, restaurant etc.

Running the troubleshoter fixes the connection issue on the spot but it soon returns

Hello Wilhem mate have you checked out what is starting up in msconfig I usually run an absolute minimum in the start up tab see this Startup Programs - Change
I use Method 3.

I am assuming the network driver is up to date too??

Thanks ICIT2LOL, that's what I went for, I'm quite a minimalist for startup tho'. The thing that I don't get is there are no different items in startup than when the wifi was loading quickly. The wifi adapter is the last release and I uninstalled and reinstalled it, last week but still no quicker to load.

The notebook boots, the desktop loads, then I see the circular wifi loading graphic spinning for far too long, whereas on the fresh install (even after installing av and my usual applications) there is none of this.

Then gradually over time the slow wifi loading thing becomes apparent, a slight delay at first, then progressively worse, sometimes as long as the rest of the notebook boot time.

Ok mate now if you haven't already I would do these

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html< if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as perOption2

ifno change then try these

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

ADWdownload from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with themalware scans

NBIf anyone who has Kaspersky as their security they may find it willnot like ADW running and to stop the nagging just temporarily disbalethe Kaspersky while one runs ADW

But before you do that have you tried rebooting the modem and have you checked if there any firmware updates for the modem personally all my gear gets shut off every night unless I want them running for any long purpose therefore the modem here gets rebooted every day and because I cannot see what the gain is from leaving stuff running 24/7 but that choice is yours of course

Thanks for your suggestions, but it is a puzzler.

I have an identical model notebook with a little used identical installation created the same week. Wifi loads quickly, as did this laptop's initially. Network drivers are the same.

I'm assuming uninstalling and reinstalling the wifi driver would have reset everything wifi related to default?

Now I am not real sure how it works in your part of the world but I have reinstalled my wifi drivers many times and as far as I am aware it doesn't change any settings related to your network ones that you have set up as you want them. I say that because as far as I know Windows operates pretty well the same anywhere and apart from any settings you have on that modem should not change .

Say for example if you are like me and a bit on the cautious side always set my network to Public then after any driver update checking in the Control Panel under Networking will let you see what the setting is for your wifi network should have no changes.

Now you said originally that the wifi works fine and then slows down and with a troubleshoot the connection returns to normal and then starts to slow down which has got me wondering just what are you downloading and is where you are downloading throttling the download due to the length of time you are on that particular location. It could also be that the networking card in the machine is failing I am not real sure and you have to take into account this is a very basic machine with a very small CPU and not a great amount of RAM.
Now I don't want to be nosy but just what sort of stuff are you hooking up to because if for example you are running a couple of tabs or just listening to some iTunes anything then that is going to really tax this machine.

I know a a member on this forum though I haven't heard from her for a while that I might ask for some help but have to wait for your reply before I do.

I appreciate your suggestions and thanks for reponding again.

I was wondering is it possible to take a technically evaluative approach?

Perhaps a software or a windows log that can monitor the boot up process and point to
an error that is impeding the loading of the wifi adapter?

Not that I'd understand any log, I'd need help there.

To recap:

This behaviour is not geolocation specific.
I have swapped out the network cards between the two machines but this doesn't change either one.

Everything on the notebook works fine, as does browsing after the adapter and connection has been established. There is no issue once a connection has been made.

There are two pre-connection issues :
The first is the progressive slow loading of the wifi adapter over time after virtually everything else has booted and loaded.

The second is that after the adapter has progressively slowed down it's loading over time, it is often difficult to connect to a cafe or hotel wifi without running the windows troubleshooter.

Neither of these issues are present in the first couple of months after a fresh windows install, then the wifi situation slowly gets worse while everything else on the pc performs normally.

Just a thought Wilm mate what have you got set in the Startup tab in msconfig - personally I uncheck everything and I see no problems with my gear and I have five machines running all the same from this tutorial seems to me there is some bottlenecking when you boot up. see this
Optimize Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums < start with point 9 the rest is useful too for making your machine more efficient I sue it on all my machines as a mater of course.

Some say that you should leave the AV checked in that tab but so far I have had no major issues in doing that. .

I experimented again with selective Startup items

The only thing I hadn't disabled was the AV.

Removing the AV certainly speeds up boot time and has shaved a bit off the wifi loading, but there is still a considerable lag that didn't used to be present.

So that is some progress. I see the AV services are still running so yes I'll still be protected.

The only other items I had in startup were kde mover-sizer and a couple of autohotkey scripts, but their loading impact is negligible.

I already follow the Black Viper and another service list recommendation (forget the name) and most of the list you linked, but there's one or two I've missed, so thanks.

No difference with chipset I'm afraid.

I also tried net adapter repair - no difference.

Hi WillM,
As your travelling around your available connections list is going to grow, not sure if the troubleshooter deletes/removes older connections and connects to the strongest available.
It wouldn't hurt to remove some yourself as a test?

Another point there is a preferred connect to network option, uncheck any that have this selected.

Roy

Thanks Roy.

I do prune out old connections as I move around, currently there are four I use in this area.
For what it is worth I've now moved the two most used to the top of the list.

All four have - connect automatically when in range - checked.
They are not within range of each other.

If I've understood you right, none of them have - connect to a more preferred network - checked.
