Its been two years since i got my internet connection and the thomson speedlink 585v7 came free with the package, although i don't know how good this device is. I recently purchased a new xbox which is kept in the living room. Here are a few details which may help you
- The router is kept in the bedroom on the wall adjacent to the door and not in line of sight of the the way out.
- There is almost no internet connectivity near the xbox which is like less than 10m although in there may be 2 walls in direct line. (1bar and keeps dropping).
- There is always some or the other problem with wifi, being slow, no connectivity or even becomes invisible sometimes i.e. not even on the list
- The place i keep is not one of the best place to keep the router but i am not asking for connection outside the house. It is an apartment and almost every room is less than 10m.
- Also on wifi connection with multiple devices like my laptop and the mobile the connection drops out even more frequently.
- Another thing, i noticed recently that the router kept restarting from time to time by itself.

Here is what i tried
- Reset the router and re configure it.

My question is
- Is this router good enough because i hadn't even heard of it?
- If it is, how can i solve this issue?
- IF not should i get a new one and will this solve the problem?

Thanks in advance

P.S.
I also have a wired connection to the desktop and no connectivity issues there so i guess there is nothing to do with the internect connection here.

It looks like you have a wireless only problem, if a wired connection is stable and does not drop. The reason ISPs provide routers is normally because when there are problems they are familiar with what customers are using and can give better advice.
When I recently joined a new ISP, it did not work so well until I was told what exact settings to use for them (they are not all the same) - so, my suggestion is to find out the ultimate wireless settings for this ISP. If this is a problem that has just started and has been OK in the past, perhaps you could buy or borrow a different router so that this can be eliminated.

Hope this is of help.

Thanks for your reply.
Just to add, a few months back i did try to approach an expert for this matter but their answer was very vague. They told me that there was a broken line in the Mediterranean which is being fixed so he customers might face connectivity issues. But when my desktop is running all the youtube videos flawlessly my xbox is barely getting connected to the internet. Also i asked one of my friend about this matter whose router is older than mine and he told me that his wifi reaches till the terrace and told me that he gets full connectivity in his house (almost the same size as mine) although he placed his router on the ceiling. I will try to get his to diagnose this problem further. Anyways, the thread is still open for any answers till then

Hello,

What is your subscribed bandwidth from ISP? Others are not doing heavy gaming, video streaming or anything that will take up a huge amount of bandwidth?

Router's firmware updated to the current one?

Also, please install and run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector from one of your wireless problematic computers. Double click the Xirrus Icon on your Desktop, Tap the Printscreen key on your keyboard, open up Paint then choose Edit from the Menu and select Paste, then SAVE it. Upload and attached the file here.

Its a 2Mbps broadband and the firmware as well is the newest. I don't do too much gaming and not much streaming. Just youtube and a few online downloads. I checked with another router and i did have some signal signal issues although it was constant and didn't go less than 1 bar. Also, i usually keep my xbox in the middle section of a glass table and so this time i just moved it on the table and the signal became stable although not very strong. Makes me think the wifi signals too bonce off glass surfaces. I guess i will do some trial and error here to find out more.
Connected back my router and started having the same problems. I guess i have to buy a new one. Any suggestion to which one??

I would give priority on upgrading your bandwidth if this possible rather than upgrading your router.

You have a few devices including computers all sharing the 2mbits bandwidth, that might be the culprit.

Hmmm... So is the bandwidth shared equally between all the PCs in the network or more priority is given to the wired device? PLUS i have seen people streaming HD to their xbox or share files using homegroups (which i do as well). I have never been able to share anything that fast even within the homegroup. I guess that would not depend on the bandwidth since it is internal.

Your router is failing, ask isp for a new one.

I have been busy trying to get help from my ISP and well there was this fellow who solved my problem on the phone line.
The problem was in the wireless configuration settings, so he told me to go to the router's gateway and then the wireless configuration. The channel selection was set to automatic (which by default choose 1). He told me to change the channel selection to manual and select some other channel (choose 6) and voila there were 4 bars on the xbox. He also told me that the first thing to do when the wifi is not coming properly and the net connection is stable is to check the channel. A lot of wireless devices also operate on the same frequency and being on the same channel may cause them to interfere with each other.
I think my wireless headset(phone) or maybe the wireless speakers (Home Theater) signals were interfering with the wifi.
Anyways, I posted this here so it might help somebody someday.
