I always assign 3GBs to the restore points. But I also take an image 3 times per week.

And leave ALL system files on the SSD. Just get rid of the hiberfile and set the pagefile to 2GB. Any other tweaks may work against you. See the logo on the bottom of my post.

Okay, SSD in. Installed OS, drivers, utilities, MSE, Origin, and BF3. Set power mode to performance(assumed this would disable the "hiberfile"), set page file to 400mb min, 800mb max (will allow auto PF on 2nd and 3rd hdd) and set restore to 2 gigs. Tomorrow I will need to add the other two drives and set them up and re install the rest of my programs. At this point I have 20gigs free. Thanks everyone.

I'm not sure about that. Never heard of that method. Try this:

In an elevated command prompt, type powercfg -h off

Press enter key.

Okay, turned off hiberfile as suggested. FYI, it wasn't on the shut down options, but I did it any way.

Got a problem though. Don't know if I should make a new thread about this or not, but what was previously my backup drive somehow got activated as a Dynamic drive in this process and now when I try to change it back, it won't. Win gives me an error message saying it cannot complete the format. ???

okay, here s a snip of my drives, F, is the one that won't Format, g and h are the same, but also where original OS is. I need to reformat f, copy important files from h, reformat g+h to just G, move files back to G and use F as Backup. I also need to figure out how to restore my profiles for certain programs like Teamspeak3 and Firefox. I am a Moderator and Senior Administrator in my clan and it will take me a week to get all of my permissions set back up correctly otherwise. So, I am hesitant to do anything else until I get the reformatting and moving around done so I don't have to do it all over again.

I have all my programs on the SSD - and I have quiet a few. But my total data on C is only 30GB.

If you have 60GB, then there must be some big chunks that should not be there. Run WinDirStat and have a look. That will show you all system and user files - but not the restore points. For those run this command in cmd:

vssadmin list shadowstorage

Look for the Allocated in C:\. If that is more than 3GB, we should make the shadowstorage smaller.

Hmm, I see no dynamic partitions - One could only see it in Disk Management. If Disk Management will not format your F partition, try the bootable CD of Partition Wizard. But I would first try to find out why Windows does not want to format it. There must be a reason.

A full picture of Disk Management would help us to assist you.

If it were me, Id worry more about the OS and all your programs fitting on the SSD comfortably, as they all benefit the most.


I'd disable the Hiberfile if you dont use that feature, and turn of system restore if you have another backup plan. Id also just reduce the size of the PF if I had to, but leave it on the SSD.

If you have enough extra space after the OS and programs are all set up, then put a game on there. If not, just install your games to a mechanical drive.
You wont be missing much from the games being on a mechanical drive separate from the OS.
OS and Apps should take priority for that SSD space IMHO.


Obviously you'll want to move the User DATA to another drive as well.

@Wishmaster, the only programs that I use on this PC are general Operating software, Anark Total Media, Procon, TS3, Firefox, and Office. Office I will install on my secondary, as it is large and I don't use it often. All of my docs, movies, movies and pictures will be stored on that drive as well. The final drive will be used for imaging of the Primary and Secondary.

The only way I know how to fix that is with Partition Wizard 4.2. (an old version). You can download the .iso from Gregs skydrive ( pw422 ). Burn that to disc and go from there.

PS: Don't install Office on a spinner. That would be ashame. Word or Powerpoint are so much faster from the SSD. I have Office on all my 6 SSDs and half of those have only 60GB.

How big is a current final install of 2010 Pro?

I have 2007 and that is 335MB in Program Files. Add a few registry entries and .dlls, then it is 400MB at the most.

okay, well I will install that as well on the ssd.

Everyone, please understand, as soon as I can, I will be ordering two Kingston HyperX 240gig ssd for Primary drives and use two spinners for imaging and backup. This is just temporary.

Okay, did that and got an error, "this bootable cd will not work with windows server"

Something is making PW think it is Server edition which requires its own PW version.
