Will a recovery disk wipe my hijacked pc completely?

Hi Stuart,

One of the security guru's has informed me that all those checks we did are adequate to deem your PC clean of any infections. As suggested earlier, continue to run all those checks on any removable media (ie. your NAS storage, USB thumb drives etc. don't forget your son's USB devices too).

I was also advised to remind you to setup your son's account with restricted permissions, to avoid possible mistakes further down the line. I thin kits a very good suggestion.

I'll do some research on your router, and see if we can work out how to stealth mode those pings - I don't think it will be too difficult. I'll post back once I have worked it out for you.

You can also ask Acer Tech Support for a clean copy Win7 Installation DVD as they are actually required under their agreement with MS to provide one but find ways to avoid it so they can enforce the sponsored bloatware which provides their profit margin. Some have reported success by asking, however. If they take a hard line, then don't tell them if you clean reinstall so you can continue getting tech support.

I am happy to hear everything checks out ok. I would like to reinforce the point of having a standard user account for yourself, and a limited account for other users, so that this issue becomes near impossible to occur in the future

OK Stuart.

I found what I belive is the on-line manual for your HUB. Please check this very carefully against your HUB (if you have the manual for it, that is even better).

On page 17 of the manual, is the instructions for setting up stealth mode (already done on your HUB?) and also the block pings - see the attached image (the image is a bit bad but it should be fine to naviagte by - if its the same as your manual, then use the manual).

You need to access these settings by logging into your HUB, and then make the changes, save, you might have to restart the HUB, and then run ShieldsUp again to confirm the ping echo has been turned off.

If you have issues, you should be ableto contact BT (assuming they are your ISP) and get them to talk you through it - it looks pretty straight forward.

Responding to ping requests is normal behaviour for Windows Vista/7.

Presumably, MS don't think it's an issue.

You can configure windows firewall to block outbound icmp.
