Will browse but unable to download anything ?

I have a Dell 9200 (4GB ram) just did a clean install of W7 64bit.

All went OK ... but now in a strange position ... it can browse internet no problem, get to any any sites ... but will not download anything ?
When I click on download .. normal download box opens but nothing in the 'download To' or' Transfer rate' fields. Eventually they time out and drop.
The top bar of download window shows 0% and does not change.

And nothing is ever downloaded.

Tried several sites nothing will download.


It has however downloaded many windows updates and installed them, so it must be able to get data OK..

Only thing other than standard install is after OS loaded I moved the default user profile location (as per tech doc here)
I have tried different ports on router .. and even swapped ports & cables of PC's that are working ... still dame .. browses happily, but no downloads.

First thing I want to download is anti-virus ... cant even download Kaspersky file.

On network & sharing .. it shows that connected to LAN ... and if I open the LA icon .. it does show as active and happily sending & receiving

I could start again and do install again ... but to save time is there anything I can do here ?

Hi is this wireless or wired issue?

1. Have you tried a different browser to see if the issue persists.

2. Review local firewall settings.

It is wired.
No issue with connection tried another pc in same port no problem.
I can't try another browser as I can't download anything.
This was a clean install.
Network was fine before this.
Firewall is whatever W7 puts in, not installed anything yet.

It sounds like winsock or TCP/IP could be messed up.

Winsock entries tells Windows 7 how to access your network services. Additionally, your TCP/IP protocol can be corrupted. The TCP/IP protocol is a stack of 4 layers that includes several transport layers, but when this stack is corrupt you will constantly have connectivity issues.

Type the following two commands into an elevated command prompt and hit enter after each. Reboot the machine and see if anything changes.


netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

no just did that & reboot, still browses anywhere OK ... but can't download anything.
Even tried save as .. it lets me choose location OK .. but again download fails.

The fact that it can browse and receives all MS updates OK ... confirms physical connection is all OK.

As a test sargan please turn off the wndows firewall and restart computer then try and download off the internet.

Try downloading kaspersky first.

Please straight after test re-enable firewall.

I gave up ... and re-installed W7 again.

This time it will allow me to download .

I am glad that your issue is sorted i am sorry it took a clean install to do it and we did not pinpoint the problem.

As I had not yet installed any software other than OS, it made sense to do it.

Have you installed all the hardware drivers yet start with the chipset drivers first.

After the drivers the anit-virus and third party firewall software is next important thing and update to the latest definitions on anti-virus and latest update for firewall then use windows update to ensure the os has all the latest patches and fixes.

Is there an easy of getting these, or does it mean searching on line?
Dell site listed loads of drivers laser time it was not easy to figure out which were the ones needed.

When looking for Dell drivers I have always found it easier to use their own search system and entering the unit service Tag, this will only show drivers that are compatible with your actual system

I'll try that ... didn't think asset tag approach would help much ... much of it has been changed.
Not Vista
New RAM
New Video card
New i/o card
New HDD's
New DVD rw

No ... added more RAM a couple of years back
Changed HDD, added DVD rw, new Grahics card, etc.

all were up to date other than Graphics card ... so yes all up to date.
