Hey, Ive been wondering if I play games too much on my computer if it will get ruined.. My parents seem to think so but I dont agree with them.

Windows 7 Home Premium x64
HP
AMD ATHLON (tm) II X2 220 Processor 2.8 Ghz
6 gb ram (5.75 usable)
Ati Radeon Hd 4200

I dont play high fps/hard core games because my graphics card cant handle it,
but I do play half-life 2 and Burnout Paradise and sometimes Soldier Front (no lag in all 3). So what do you guys think ?

I think file sharing on a computer will wear it out faster because of all the read/writes it does to the hard drive, I think your parents just want you off the computer maybe doing something else....:D

I download alot on my computer, songs, movies, games, will that wear it out too? Sorry Im just a newbie .. dont know too much about computers >.>

I won't agree with this, a PC can be used for weeks without being shut down, the components are designed to last and endure heavy use

It depends on your cooling components, excessive heat can damage the parts

I lol'd. Your parents are trolling you. Play whatever you want, when you want it. Games will have no effect on your hardware, unless you're straining it too hard (in which case you won't play anyway, because no one can stand very low FPS), and even the only problem that can only arise is overheating IF your cooling is bad.

But before you consider all these, I'd say it's time for a prank on your parents.

When I was in High School I had a friend whose parents convinced him that turning his stereo up too loud would blow out the speakers. My after-school job was as a stereo salesman so I looked up his specs. 50W amp and 150W speakers. :sarc:

I wasn't too welcome in their home after that... :p

While we're on the subject of computers, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that excessive masturbation can lead to blindness. It's true.

I hope you understand the seriousness of this. :)

On topic though, you don't really need to worry about your PCs temperature either. If it overheats, it will either reset or shutdown. If that happens, you can open up your PC and feel the temperature. That's the layman's way of doing it, anyway. If it's too hot and all your coolers are working, your hardware can't handle that application. You'll probably be doing a lot of exploring once you start playing games and get annoyed whenever one isn't working, but I suggest you ask someone more experienced before you start fiddling with solutions given by the internet. Such as changing BIOS settings, including but not limited to fan speeds, voltages, features such as cool n quiet.

Have you played a prank on your parents yet? They deserve it :)

gaming by itself will not kill your computer, but if too much heat is generated by the components that will. Download HWMonitor and it will show you the temperatures. CPU temperatures should max out around 70 C and Graphics card should max around 80 C (someone correct me if i'm wrong)

Also, like Joules said, constant read writes will kill your hard drive fast, that's why I always download to a usb or SD Card

Just FYI; Full tilt on a 50 watt amp into 150 watt speakers will in fact kill the speakers unless they have a thermal protection circuit. The amp is protected with a thermal overload so it's safe but it's clipped wave forms will smoke the speaker in short order.

That is a fast way of killing your flash memory, since you only have so many write cycles.

And to be honest, your computer will probably be outdated and replaced before gaming will have any affect on it.
Keep it dust free and it will last. Hard drive may go out eventually, but that is normal since all hard drives will eventually fail.

Full tilt on practically any amp could do that. I'm talking about a guy whose parents wanted him down around 10% volume, and not because they were worried he'd fry it. In fact, they might have put up with the extra noise for a while if they thought he would fry it, since it wouldn't make any noise at all after that. :D
