Solved will higher speed broadband help...

I'm pretty sure it wont but , we are due to get fiber optic soon and the speeds will be 100 meg and is said to increase later in the year to 300meg
the question is will a high speed broadband improve the homegroup speeds for sharing files between desktop and laptop ,

Sadly no, that will be limited to the mechanicals directly between their processes. But the good news is it won't slow them down !

I'm sure a higher broadband speed won't make any difference, but if this article is to be believed, leaving the Homegroup and setting up Workgroup sharing using 56-bit encryption rather than 128-bit encryption can increase throughput by 12.5%.

Simple change in settings pumps up Win7 networks

thought as much, still it means the data transfer cable i recently bought to improve the moving of files faster wont be wasted.

Hi Julian,

In addition, if you want to improve the performance in your network, upgrading your NIC's to 10/100/1000mbps would help a lot (not unless you have these already in your NICs and WLAN devices). If your router supports Gig LAN Ports, you may use Cat5e or higher patch network cable. Gig Network Switches. You'll see an improvement when you do file transfers.

I agree with everybody that the broadband speed will not affect the Homegroup or Workgroup. Bottlenecks would come from heavy file transfers/usage over the network if being utilize by a few Users at the same time. It surely can be avoided and there are good practice for this.

O, well don't feel so bad now Seavixen - my 3.5Mbs is not the worst after all (fibre is way off the priority list for Scotland) so that'll be it for a while yet.... LOL

its a shame that the new speeds wont improve sharing across the homegroup, hopefully in future this will be something of the past but for now i shall contend with the data cable i purchased recently , it has vastly improved the transfer speeds and where 1GB would take 10 mins to move it now takes less than 2 mins.
worth investing in for only £7 and no postage.

My understanding (and I'm sure I will be corrected) is homegroups work on the internal LAN between systems on your network and its performance is only influenced by your actual wireless or ethernet speeds. Your BB speed is the incoming WAN from you ISP and only affects download/ upload performance and internet browsing etc....

^^v true booh; perhaps in the homegroup situation the interface is more important as u suggest: usb3 , firewire, and now thunderbolt ...and yes, as shaw says, the model of wireless router might help -- maybe a router with 5ghz channels .
