You said small desktop tower... Have you looked inside the machine and are sure there are four memory slots?

Then you support a maximum of 4 GB RAM, and the fastest you can use is DDR 400, or the other designation for it is PC3200. I would suggest replacing the sticks you have now, as you will never find a matched pair for a dell machine purchasing separately. Also, the RAM in the machine right now is horribly under specification, at 166 Mhz instead of 333 or 400 as recommended by Dell.

dell optiplex gx270 small desktop tower.

Documentation

If you have the small desktop (not the small form factor), you have 4 DIMM slots, and the machine supports 1GB DDR DIMMs for up to 4GB total.

Unfortunately, DDR is older and therefore more expensive than DDR2 or DDR2. A couple of 1GB sticks would cost $92US at www.crucial.com.

The Optiplex GX270 is an old system for a Win7 upgrade, but I know of no reason why it wouldn't work. Dell won't support the upgrade, but running the Upgrade Advisor will help you discover whether drivers exist for all of your hardware.

oh...well then...i dunno what to do now i really want windows 7 so badly.

It will run, but I would keep in consideration an upgrade to RAM that is the highest frequency supported. I can only guess that more RAM was added after the computer was purchased that is at a lower frequency than 333 or 400, which would throttle all memory to the lowest speed stick. That's not a bad deal on the value select ram, especially since it's getting harder to find.

If you look on the back or side of the tower there should be a Service Tag number on a sticker. If you find that and enter it into the service and support section on the Dell website it will take you to the correct page for that model Dell. From there you can download the correct drivers, manuals and look up the specs, etc.
If you want to try before you buy you can install windows 7 and leave the product code blank. You can then run it for 30 days as a trial, longer if you rearm it. So if you know someone with a Windows 7 32 bit DVD that you can borrow make yourself a universal install disk and you can try any version you want.
