Wim file in a VHD - do i have this right?

Ok im reading the configuring windows 7 book from microsoft and it tells me to capture my machine using imagex to a wim file.
I do that and it seem to go through ok.

The book then tells me to create a vhd and add it to the bootloader, that part is easy and gives me the option of loading from vhd or normally.

It then tells me to copy my wim file to the vhd and boot from it, is this meant to work?

Can you just place a wim file onto a vhd and expect it to load the wim file?

It seems bizarre, i thought i would of had to use wim2vhd.

Can some one clarify? cheers

Welcome! Did you try it? I do not know if it will work. If I were you, I would try it and post back with the results. If you need help, we will give it our best shot.

I did try it and well i don't think it works, when i create the vhd and place the wim file in it, the machine boots but it just loads my primary os.

I was using sun virtual box and have since moved over to vmware workstation 7 to practice while reading the book. With sun virtual box booting from the vhd would just load a startup repair screen, now with vmware workstation it seems to work better.

I suspect my best option is to use wim2vhd, i just wondered if placing a wim file in a vhd would allow you to boot that image with out the like of wim2vhd.
