Win 10 reactivation after motherboard change

Probably should be asking this on Win 10 forums but already had an account here so...

My motherboard died, going to replace with a different brand. I never created an MS account to retain my license because I didn't know about it. My Win 10 installation is an upgrade from Win 7 Pro DVD. How can I retain my installation after motherboard swap? Someone was claiming that I can just re-enter my Win 7 license key when it asks to reactivate, but this sounds like it'd be too easy.

Hi skeeloco,
it will depend on your original licence type
OEM or retail, MS are currently being quite lenient on reactivations,
however as you have changed your motherboard having an OEM licence might give you a problem with both 7 and 10

I think youll find you do have an MS account, tied to your email address.

Ok so, it's actually Win 7 Ultimate and it's definitely not OEM version because I got it from my school. So will I just be able to re-enter license key when required to activate? I've tried logging into Microsoft account on website but it's not recognizing my e-mail so I'm not sure an account was ever created.

Aha information is the key

As you have a school issued volume licence, Imagine as its now called
download it from your schools Imagine link
You should have no trouble at all,
if you run into a problem
just have a quick word with IT, they will provide you with all the info you need
(the MS email address i referred to as being yours is actually the Colleges in your case.)
