Hi, hoping someone can help....
I purchased an HP Laptop on Ebay back in 2014, which was excellent. It was from a laptop rental company in the UK. In early 2016 I purchased an identical laptop for spares and to replace the case which was breaking. I installed my hard drive to the second one and shortly after was told that my windows 7 pro was not genuine. I purchased a key on ebay and was okay, did the same last year and was okay. About three weeks ago I replaced the hard drive as it was getting noisy and I cloned my existing and swapped over. Yesterday I started getting the black screen and not genuine windows message. Now I cannot activate with a new key. I am a pensioner here in Spain trying to live on a basic UK pension.... so there is no way I can purchase a new laptop and simply cannot re install windows it would be a nightmare for me having very many programs. Is there anyway you can help me with advice as how to solve this problem.
I managed to change the key on cmd as per your instructions but could not activate it I got this message.
Don't know if the image will appear.
activate2.jpg

But the link given on MS does not go anywhere
" We are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found.
The URL may be misspelled or the page you're looking for is no longer available."

So hoping someone can help..............
Thanks in advance.

Hi goatherd, welcome to the Forum.

The problem is you have an MAK activation version of Windows 7 Pro. MAK versions are issued by Microsoft to large organisations so they can license a number of computers within the organisation & they pay a subscription fee based on the number licensed. This license is renewed on regular basis. If the company closes or changes it's version of Windows that license expires.

The first HP laptop you had would have had an OEM SLP version of Windows 7 that is exclusively for HP. Other major makers also have exclusive OEM SLP versions. This OEM SLP license activation is locked to the motherboard, so when you got the second laptop & changed the Hard Drive over to it the activation code on the motherboard did not match so it triggered a non genuine notice. OEM stands for "Original Equipment Maker" & SLP stands for "System Locked Preinstall".

You then bought a license on Ebay which is the one you have showing on your attached screen shot which is the MAK version. Now you have replaced the Hard Drive & are getting a non genuine activation again.

Faulty, pirated, hacked or stolen Windows 7 licenses are frequently for sale on Ebay, so buying a license there is not a good idea. The MAK license you currently have is in breach of the license as far as Microsoft is concerned as your computer is not part of a large organisation.

This is going to be a difficult problem as you will have to spend some money. You could contact HP & see if you can still purchase a new Windows 7 installation from them, or you could update to Windows 10.

Hi Ranger 4, thanks for welcome and information....... which is a bummer..... but one interesting thing, the original OS was Win 7 Home Premium on the label underneath, but the installation of Pro was made by this rental company, still have their name on the installation. Another thing I noticed, I did a Belarc scan back in 2015 and the Product ID is different to the one displayed now...!! I certainly have not reinstalled..... strange? I was thinking that maybe swap the motherboard from my old laptop would that work then would you think?

Cheers GP

Thanks townsbg for info, but a bit out of my league on a 500€ month pension from miserly UK Gov.!

If the original sticker shows Windows 7 Home Premium, then it was most probably what was installed by HP when the computer was originally sold.

The rental company apparently changed that over to Windows 7 Pro & that may well have been using the MAK activation as no doubt they had a lot of computers. When you changed the motherboard the activation failed. Then you purchased a license on Ebay that was probably bogus & that has resulted in your current dilemma.

Changing the motherboard back to the old one probably wont work but might be worth trying. If you change it try using the activation code shown on the original Windows 7 Home Premium sticker. I doubt it will work, without having an actual version of Windows 7 Home Premium.

Do you know anyone that might have an HP disc for Windows 7 Home Premium, if you do you could use it to reinstall Windows on your computer using the activation code that you have on the sticker on your computer. Doing a reinstall will wipe all the programs you now have loaded on the computer so will have to reinstall them & you will lose all your data files as well, unless you save your data files to a USB thumb drive & reinstall them, but programs cannot be reinstalled from a USB thumb drive.
