Win 7 can't connect to win 7 shared printer

Hi all,

Have setup a bunch of computers with Windows 7 Professional, with all updates from windows update. When my network connection was detected I selected Work Network.

Installed a HP Officejet G85 printer using USB. Windows 7 automatically installed the correct driver for me. And the printer works fine from the computer its attached to.

I then shared the printer by:

Start Devices and Printers > Right clicked on my printer > selected printer properties > clicked sharing tab
Clicked share this printer, and render print jobs on client computers > clicked apply > clicked ok

From another windows 7 computer i try to connect to the shared printer, i've tried using the \\hostname\printer name and \\ip address\printer name but nothing works.

I've tried disabling the firewalls. But that did not fix it either.

I then tried changing the printer server and another computer to home network instead of work network. A homegroup was created and I was issued a homegroup password, when I setup the home network on the 2nd test computer it detected that a homegroup had already been created and I had to enter the password. Now I can connect to the printer.

Is there a way to do with with Work Network setting, and is there any good reason to do it that way ?

Yep, thats how I do it, however it does not work with network set to "Work Network" , it only works when network is set to "Home Network"

AT (Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings) I have share printers and folder ticked, I even ticked turn off password protected sharing. But nothing works under "Work Network"

Any tips appreciated, for now I'm chaging my network over to Home Network.

However my issue is that its NOT documented anywhere

If you set all the computers to work profile and then check the radio button: "Turn on file and printer sharing" in advanced sharing settings." (make sure your doing the settings below work profile)
Then also have to check the share and NTFS permission on the printer. Then you will be able to connect.

You need to install the printer drivers on all machines that need to connect to the printer.

You will get the drivers from the host computer that share the printer.

Sorry but that doesn't occur by itself a certain percentage of the time. It would be nice if it happened every time but that isn't how it works. In either event, the drivers do need to be installed on all machines that need to use the printer.

It's also required to turn on File and Printer Sharing on the machines using and sharing the printer but that doesn't always allow for the drivers to jump from one machine to the other.


I know this because I've already given the same advice many times with great success, just two weeks ago in fact. Kari even gave me rep the last time because I solved the problem with a single post. Maybe I should go find that post on your behalf LOL.

So I'll be sticking to my proven advice and wouldn't change a single word of it.
