I'm having trouble finding this information, thanks for the help if you know the answer. I purchased the upgrade DVD at my university for W7 Enterprise Edition. I'm currently running XP and am backed up and ready to go.

I can't activate until next Thursday - what does this mean? Can I install and use W7 fully until then or do I need to wait until 10/22 to install? I'd hate to install and then not have full access to things...such as the internet. :)

Probably a dumb question. Thanks!

Okay, I'll give it a shot. For some reason the employee said I won't be able to successfully activate until 10/22. Maybe it has something to do with the university-licensed copy? If this is the case, will that change functionality?

Thanks -

Thanks to both of you - it looks like I can go ahead and install and then just activate next week. It's not retail, it's a university license. W7 Enterprise Edition for 34 bucks, I couldn't pass that up (since I'm graduating soon and won't have access to that kind of pricing for long). I also found this post:

Thanks so much -

I didn't think that Enterprise was for sale to anybody through any channel unless it was a volume license business customer.

You should be able to install and activate, I believe the validation can't be done until 22 Oct.

Correction, it's Windows 7 Ultimate. But I did buy Office 2007 Enterprise Edition as well. Maybe the university is that business with the license (it's University of Texas). They have a lot of similar licenses from Microsoft - but they come with a long list of requirements and you have to sign a separate agreement. For example, you're supposed to stop using the product if you withdraw from the university (riiiiight). Graduation is an exception, thank goodness, and that's what's coming up soon. I hope....

Thanks again. Hopefully I'll be swinging to the smooth sounds of Windows 7 shortly.

You get a 30 day period before you need to enter a serial and activate anyway, so you are fine. In fact, since this is your first go around with Windows 7, it would be dumb NOT to take advantage of that time to make sure the system is running fine before activating. You could install it today, and if you are satisified with it in two weeks, or so, then pop in your key and activate it. If not, you can reformat and try it again, without wasting an activation.

And if you want to go longer than 30 days, you can always do the rearm trick 3 more times...giving you a total of 120 days without a key. For some people, if you format often enough you may not need to activate at all.

Thanks again for the help my friends - just in case anyone has a similar question, here is my post-installation report:

Works like a charm. Can't activate with my key yet (doesn't work) but it will next week. Really enjoying Windows 7 so far, even if it's mostly for aesthetic reasons so far.
