Win 7 HP....Optical Drive not being detected...

Hi all,
My friend has an HP Pavilion DV6 Entertainment Notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed. It's only about 3 months old. I rebuilt the unit with a fresh copy of Win 7 HP 64bit as I did not want all the bloat-ware that came with the machine.
The issue is that the unit is unable to see the optical drive (no optical drive icon). In the device manager, there is an exclamation mark next to the optical drive. It was working originally. Windows 7 normall takes care of the drivers for this drive doesn't it? Is the optical drive faulty. I've tried un-installing and re-installing but still hasn't corrected itself.

Yes windows would normally take care of the drivers for that type of device. If you double click the device and go to properties you should see a message as to why it isn't working. See what it says and go from there. Sometimes software can mess up an optical drive, especially if it is also a burner. Some games use drivers as part of their copy protection and when you un-install them the drive doesn't work any more. Anyway see what the error message is.

Although Windows 7 is good at retrieving and installing drivers, when it comes to laptops, I have discovered that it is critical to go the manufacturers web site and download the driver pack for your laptop. Sometimes there's a complete driver disk included in the recovery disks that ship with a laptop.

I agree with mborner, I own an Compaq and HP desktop computer - Both of these particular models require HP DVD play & HP branded Cyberlink software for the DVD player to function properly. Locate the Software & Drivers page for HP then enter exact make and model of computer, after that select OS (Win 7x64) providing HP supports Win 7 for that model , then DVD player related drivers/software.
