I apologize in advance for asking the same question everyone else has been asking but with slightly different configs.

I installed win 7 custom upgrade to new blank c drive from xp/ubuntu duel boot (d drive) using a networked cdrom.

I want to remove xp/ubuntu duel boot drive completely and boot stand alone win 7 on c. I have read the numerous posts about running win 7 repair 3 times after activating the c drive win 7 partition but I have no cdrom to boot with on this system. Is there another way to repair win 7 on c to boot stand alone? I can't believe MS made it this difficult to do a VERY SIMPLE INSTALL by not giving any boot options during the installation of win 7 upgrade. Totally flustered!

Hi wlbragg. Welcome to SevenForums!

When you insert the Windows 7 Installation Disc into your DVD Drive, follow the Installation procedure until you get to the part where it asks where you want Windows 7 installed. As you said, you want to remove the Dual Boot, so you need to reformat Drive D and Drive C. So, in the installer when you get to the Hard Disk selection(s), click on C Drive, then click "Format". Do the same for the D Drive, select Drive C, and continue with the installation! :)

Report back if you bump into any issues.

Thanks HiddenC, That would certainly have worked if I wanted to wipe my original XP/Ubuntu install. I didn't want to wipe that install as I am going to use that drive as configured on another computer. At this point I have already installed win7.

theog, not sure exactly what your saying.

Do the startup repair with only Windows 7 Hd fitted.

I can't boot without the xp/ubuntu hd fitted. I did try booting into win7 repair from normal xp/ubuntu duel boot, (dangerously) disconnecting power from xp/ubuntu drive right before executing the repair choice. Did it three times (just in case) but it appeared to do nothing. Still can't remove xp/ubuntu drive and boot. I get a ntldr not found error. I read somewhere else about bcdboot c:\windows /s c:, but it didn't work for me.

theog, I can't get to the startup repair without the xp drive installed. Keep in mind I have no cdrom drive on this system (I installed while booted under xp/ubuntu through a networked cdrom drive on another computer).

None of the solutions offered work unless you have a cdrom drive installed on the system which I don't. So to make it easy I went ahead and installed a cdrom out of another computer, disconnected the xp drive, booted up on the win7 install disk and ran system repair. It did fix it enough to boot on the new install of win7 on c drive. It left a duel boot config on c with win7 (default) and older win system as the alternate. There is now no other older win ops on the computer. It's not the end of the world but I would like to clean that up and remove the extra boot item. Any ideas?

Thanks for all the help!

In msconfig>boot tab delete the older OS listing.

If necessary, install EasyBCD 2.02 to Win7 to Edit Boot Menu, deleting older choice.

Win7 Repair must be run from booted Repair CD or DVD if you don't have the 100mb System Reserved partitionw which places it on the F8 Advanced Boot Options.

Even the WinRE Repair popup triggered by auto-failover cannot be relied upon fully as it runs from OS files which may be compromised and needing repair. So you really need to have the DVD or Repair CD on hand, easiset written to stick if necessary using Ultra ISO trial version.
