Solved Win 7 Pro 64 bit - service pack 1 won't go away in WU

This is an HP EliteBook 8540p with Win 7 Pro SP1 installed on it. Windows update keeps trying to install SP1 for some reason, and it always fails with a Code 8007065E. SP1 was included in the OS and was never installed separately later. How do I make windows update happy?

Hi davidh10 & welcome to the forum.
Your info says Win10 64 bit. Then you state in your post Win 7 pro.
If, you are running win 7 pro, uninstall it from the "installed updates" list and reboot. Manually reinstall sp1 for M$ download here. double-left click and install.
Hopefully, problem solved.

This problem is on my sister's laptop. SP1 does not appear in Add/Remove programs\installed updates because it was not installed separately. The restore HP DVD says Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1. If you try to reinstall the full 64 bit version of SP1 it runs for about a minute and then says "service pack 1 is already installed." If you try to run the WU file it gives the 8007065E fail error code. Other people have encountered this problem but no one has a fix.

You could hide the update.
right-click update> Hide Update

Try this first: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components Kudos to Brink for the batch file

1. Download attachment
2. Run
3. reboot
4. check for windows updates.

If that doesn't help

You could also try manual uninstall sp1

At a minimum, I would create system restore point before trying or preferably full disk (image) backup before trying. I don't trust Windows backup/restore point, as it has failed me several times in the past.

I use AOMEI backupper full local download (free) I like free Simple easy to use program. You need external hdd or USB stick with enough memory to store .adi file. By the way, you can set AOMEI to copy the entire hdd (uses lot of disk space) or, as I do, copy only the systemfiles/files/programs on disk no empty space (saves gigs of space if your hard drive is partially full)

To manually uninstall sp1:

1. click Start orb
2. Type cmd
3. Left-click cmd.exe> run as administrator
4. Copy & paste: wusa /uninstall /KB:976932 /quiet /norestart
5. press <enter>
6. Reboot
7. Try installing sp1 again either automatic or manual.

Post again and let us know your results.

The SP1 update has mysteriously disappeared overnight. It was there yesterday but today WU says "there are no updates available for your computer." The laptop has been turned off so I have no idea what happened. Thanks for the posts!

if it returns try my suggestions. Can't hurt anything, providing the last one you create a restore point or do disk image backup!

What could of happened is your shutting down your computer and then starting your computer again. Many time Windows 7 will need to do this or a restart to reset everything to it's liking.
