Win 7 slower than Vista? :S

Same here. However, my vista was customized and lited.

Once I did the same for win 7, they are running about the same

I have to agree with the fact that windows 7 hauls on my computer and the only thing close to good I have is a 256 video card.

I would say this windows 7 is windows Vista style/features with xps speed.

I have a Dell 8100 1.3ghz w/1.1g Ram and above stated video card and windows 7 works alot faster then Vista Ult and still faster then Vista Home Prem I have.

Ooh and hard drive space. Clean install on Vista Ult was 13gigs. Clean install with Home Prem was 11.

Windows 7 Ult RC 7100 was 9gigs clean install. I am happy with only a 20gig OS hard drive and having more then half free for the system to feed off of.

Also I noticed my Vista Rating for Performance was 2.2
The Performance Rating I got on Windows 7 was 1.8

My CPU rating went down from 2.2 to 1.8

Just went back to Vista32bit for a while... everything is so much faster!

Is it just my experience? or is Win7 actually slower? :sarc:

You have to take into account what software you are running, certain AntiVirus software will drain your resouces, as well as any tweaking software you may have installed. I'm in agreement with every1 else as to Windows 7 being lightening to Vista's snail.

Also, if you update your system specs in 'User CP' then we may be able to give sound advise other than 'Clean Install' :p

It was said that the 27-4-2009 the RC for TechNet could be downloaded.
Is there someone who knows anything more about that.

Hey everyone,

I did some googling with limited help. Not starting new thread as it doesn't deserve it.

For me, windows 7 RC 32bit is running slower than Vista 32bit on the same machine. I've done 2 clean installs of win7 to no avail. I know that it's not a problem with win7 as I have insatlled it on an aging desktop with no problems, infact, the old desktop runs win7 faster that my laptop.

Here's the specs:

HP pavilion 9000
core 2 duo 1.6ghz
2BG RAM
geforce 7600 M
2 x 160GB hard rives at 5400rpm

Thanks for any help you can give.

Well the obvious. Memory is limited, but should work. How big is the page file, if you open task manager how much cpu, and ram is availible? the 2 HD's aren't on a raid controller, right? Tell us more about the setup

As we're on the topic of speed, a very good friend of mine ( my ex I.T co-worker ) told me that everyone is in this phase with "Windows 7 owns on old machines etc". He brought it to my attention.. Has anyone ever tried Vista on an old machine?

He actually did a test on an old dell laptop and he concluded that Vista performed better than Windows 7 on the older machine....

Just... pointing it out... not agreeing or anything..

I have 2GB space set for the page file.

There's no raid on the hard drives as I use the 2nd to dual boot ubuntu.

640ish MB RAM used with only task manager and firefox open.

Both CPUs are recognised and seem to be behaving normally. They sit at 0% - 1% on idle and spike at 40% when opening firefox.

Drivers are all up to date.

As for the low-end desktop, it uses 450MB RAM with just firefox and task manager open. Both setups have more or less the same configuration and software installed.
Specs for it are 1GB ram, P4 processor with HT, radeon x300 gpu, dell 4700 motherboard. It's processor behaves the same as on the laptop's (0 - 1% and spikes at 40% when opening programs) yet feels almost twice as responsive.

Like I said, window 7 is fine on the desktop but is crawling on the laptop. Could there be a hardware failure somewhere in there?

thanks for your response.

Um well, Id say a dell inspiron 1405 (3-4 years old) and a dell P-IV 3.0 (6-7 years old) both coughed and died on vista even with 2gigs ram. Both machines are running win 7 ultmate in 1gig ram (32bit) and I dont notice. Yeah I could use more ram and a quad core but for everyday use win 7 wins. Everytime someone complains about their computer I remove vista (whatever sp) and put win 7 and the complaints end. I even had one customer who was so afraid of losing win 7 BETA, that he has set his clock back a year and 7000 is still running.

Ken

Hard drive was defragged about 3 weeks ago.
Using windows firewall with AVG free as anti virus.
Indexing is on so that it only indexes my personal files.
IPv6 isn't connected to anything, using IPv4 to connect to internet.
WMP sharing service is on.

are you using the same harddisk?

i installed my Vista in a 200GB SATA HDD (16MB Cache) and Win7 in a 40GB PATA HDD (2MB Cache)..

Windows 7 is still as fast as my Vista
i bet it'll be far more faster in a better HDD...

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate RTM 7600.16835.090713.1255 and it runs smoother and faster than Windows Vista Ultimate (last OS installed aside from 7 RC).. Even when I'm still using the Windows 7 RC, still better than Vista.. The only problem I encountered is that when playing Fiesta Online, the program closes when lunching luncher.exe.. I've read that Gameguard doesn't support Windows 7, still waiting for the patch till now..:D

I think as the drivers evolve Win7 will get faster. It's not even out yet so how can we expect the drivers to be where they should be. Also, most of the anti virus programs will slow a system down, especially when they aren't made for Win7.

Pouvez Me, Sil vous plait.

Windows 7 is slower than Vista (both x64) for me too!!

I have the thorn in my side of a Dell XPS from 2007 (school discount). They sold me BTX after Intel had canceled it. Anyway I have SATA 1.5. I have PCI-E 1.0. I have DDR2 667 MHZ. So my 70 lbs aluminum case with 1000 watt power supply is actaully a prison.

Anyway... to get to the point, and avoid the bitterness of Dell's greed and subservience to Intel, I boot much slower in Win 7. My brother is using an SSD with the JMicron controller and SATA 3Gb/s on a weaker system and boots Win 7 like a dream.

My paging file is 4GB. To me it feels like Windows never grabs and makes full use of my CPU.

A few things of note:
I'm using Win7 Ultimate x64
I'm using Norton Internet Security 2010.
I have already stripped the startup on MsConfig.
When my system is crunching and I'm multi-tasking my CPU usage never, ever gets to even half way on the 4 cores. Vista had no problem there.

And yes Norton has returned to competitive rates of system performance.
Ok so I think I may know what the cause might be.... but I'm not sure... If I check the Resource Monitor 1.29GB shows grayed out as Hardware reserved. If I go to Computer -> Properties then it reports 4.00 GB (only 2.75GB usable). I have no idea why or how to free that memory up but I see other threads of people having this issue. Hopefully I find more forums on this topic.
I checked each RAM chip and it is fine. I checked each DIMM slot and it is fine. I ran a intensive RAM test that took over 6 hours last night and no errors reported.

You would be more likely to get a response if you started your own new thread. Just a heads up for the next time

Can you describe your problem exactly
