Something is obviously very wrong so in the absence of any solution I suppose we must consider an virus infection.

Run Malwarebytes in Safe Mode to see if anything shows up.

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

Other than that, I think it is Microsoft Support as Jan suggested or a clean install of Windows and carefully updating a few updates at a time rather than a whole bunch all at once.

Found 10 so far and still going, should be finished in the next half hour. Quite annoyed my AVG didn't pick it up :/.

On a side note, can you recommend a good combination of free security software? Been using a combination of AVG + Spybot for the past 5-10 years. Not really checked to see how well they have been keeping up with other security firms.

Many of us use Microsoft Security Essentials alongside Malwarebytes.

AVG seems to have fallen by the wayside these days.

Well, sorry it came to that, but it's probably for the best.

As an aside, when it comes to installing SP1 you might want to consider using the standalone intaller, rather than getting it through Windows Updates.

As for the other updates, I've found it beneficial just to install a few at a time rather than a whole bunch all at once.

Heh - I used to actuallly sell AVG, I liked it so much!
Not any more - it's got more and more bloated (and, I think, less effective) over the past three or four years.

MSE works well for me - and seems to be fairly light on resources. It's certainly never conflicted with anything I've thrown at it, but be careful if you put a real-time malware scanner on there as well (such as MBAM paid-for or trial), as they can have big problems.
I tried MBAM with real-time protection together with MSE in Vista once - and only once

FWIW RE Security.
AVG Anti Virus Pro {paid} is used on all computers here. {for years in fact}
Have never had a problem or intrusion ever.
No AV is 100% accurate. So much depends on the surfing habits of the user concerned.

Re Spybot. This is not recommended by the so called " experts" for Win 7.
