Solved Win 7 sp1 update hangs in wusa.exe

Recently I installed Win7 Pro x64 (genuine MS product) on an HP Pavilion a6009n desktop PC. When trying to update it always hangs both through the control panel update and with any manually downloaded updates an I have tried many. The culprit is always wusa.exe. I have installed windows update agent 7.6 in safe mode, run sfc /scannow with no correction all to no avail. I am at my wits end as all updates seem involve the use of wusa.exe.
Any help will be much appreciated.
