Hi,
I have never placed anything in the Startup Folder on this particular PC. Recently added a Video Card with a fan & wanted SpeedFan to start automatically.
I was unsuccessful - with CPUZ & GPUZ as well. After reading several threads here was fearing the worst when it occurred to me that all of those require UAC (User Account Control).

So I placed a number of programs = Media Player, Adobe reader, Bing Desktop, IE10 all in startup & they started right up. Hopefully that means my system is OK & doesn't require a repair install.

Am I on the right track? Any idea why I cannot get programs requiring UAC to work in Startup?

Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Thank you

Edit: suppose I could turn UAC off?

I turned UAC off & Startup is now working with SpeedFan. Perhaps I posted too quickly. Not sure UAC is something I should leave disabled tho?

Hello newpgm,

By default when UAC is turned on, Windows will not run anything elevated (Run as administrator) at startup for security reasons.

Turning off UAC will let you as your found out, but your system is less secure without UAC turned on to prompt you for approval before letting anything run elevated.

If you would like to keep UAC turned on, then you could use the workaround below to run an elevated program at startup.
First, create a task to run an elevated shortcut using the tutorial below.
At step 23 in the tutorial above, use the run at startup as a task option to create a new task to run the elevated shortcut from above.
Hope this helps, :)
Shawn
