Win 7 takes 15 minutes to boot

Windows 7 , starts very slow – takes about 10 to 15 minutes to boot up . TaskManager shows zero percentage of CPU usage and 20 percentage of memory usage . If I launch a fair size program like Microsoft Word , the CPU goes up to 1% for a second and then returns to zero. The ram goes up to 21% of the returns 20% . Meanwhile it takes Microsoft Word about five minutes to launch .

I’ve tried running memory tests but on the in-depth one I could never see the results because it takes about eight hours, and in the event manager I can never find results to the memory test . I run these tests from windows and from the Windows recovery console but never achieved any results except for the quickie test which showed no faults.

The disk management console shows all the partitions intact and healthy and I can navigate around in Windows Explorer without difficulty . The size of the hard drive is read accurately.

Occasionally I also get the memory error message as seen in the linked screenshot -Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

Is this enough information to tell me whether it is a software or hardware issue .

Thank you for taking the time to consider my issue .

We need to know your system specs, what's running at startup. Run a disk check to make sure there are no problems open an admin CMD prompt type chkdsk c: /f it will say can't run and ask to run at start say yes. What anti virus are you using make sure it's not doing a scan at start

How long does it take to boot in Safe Mode (F8)?

You can have a disk failure.
Schedule a disk check
On a CMD window type
chkdsk C: /f When asket to schedule on next boot - Yes

Okay a little more information when I booted into (not safe) mode this morning. I got the typical window from AVIRA.systraystart trigger.exe – bad image , which it says that C:\Windows\SYS WOW64\ACTXPRXY.Dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error . Try installing the program again using the original installation media blah blah blah .

I was also forgot to mention – even though we've been using a Avira antivirus a window always displays which says Microsoft security essentials – at risk . This app isn't monitoring your PC because the apps service stopped you should restart it now.

I'll time the Safe Boot and do the system check now

By the way, does it make any difference if I run check disk from safe mode ?

To boot into safe mode brought the desktop up in about 30 seconds . To get the start menu button to work took about 90 seconds . all this time it spends trying to load "Windows help with the progress bar saying getting health content ". after about four minutes the keyboard could enter something into the box above the start menu for check disk.

After eight minutes I succeeded in getting the command prompt window to open ..... Pardon any typos because I'm doing this from my small phone window

Forgetting what you guys told me that I would have to restart , nonetheless , this is what occurred until I saw the restart requirement in the commandline window :

When I ran check disk and double checked my typing it took about five minutes till I got this response "the type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive." This was attempted in safe mode .

To my surprise several minutes later I got an additional commandline response which was " check disk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this ??? to be checked in the next system restart. so of course I chose yes and is running now.

If it boots fast in safe mode, is one of the start up programs.
I also have Avira (free) and it works well.
What you can't have is two antivirus. You have to uninstall one of them. (avira or MS essentials).

Okay I ran check disk it rebooted and 10 minutes into the scan it showed that 1/3 of scan completed and that it couldn't read four different sectors .

but below that it said file verification is completed . 247,000 files processed . 1000 large files processed

I walked away and came back 1/2 hour later and the computer has rebooted . So I don't know if I'm going to be able to see the results when it reboots in the event manager thing, as last time I tried this I couldn't find any results there.

. Fair enough but does the antivirus start in safe mode? . The second question I have is avira has been installed on this computer (my friends by the way ) for two years , apparently always coinciding with Microsoft security essentials, why all of a sudden the problem ? Also, I have friends who for some strange reason deliberately run two antivirus systems without incident

As I wrote, if it boots fast in safe mode, is one of the start up programs.
You should never use two antivirus as they conflict with each other.

But I suspect that you have a more serious problem. A disk failure.
And that is why some programs don't start properly on startup. Safe boot don't load this startup programs (antivirus etc) and it boots fast.

Boot from the Win 7 installation disk, go to Repair launch the CMD window and type
chkdsk c: /r / f
It will check for disk bad sectors and can take all night long.
ONCE it begins, don't interrupt. When it finish you'll be able to read the results
