So after installing windows 7 the other day, everything seemed to be working properly. I was able to access all of my network shares to my file server, and other machines in the house.

Even yesterday this all worked as normal. But now today I am unable to communicate with any other pc in the house. either by \\pc-name or \\ip-address. I receive the error 0x80070043: The network name cannot be found.

From a command window, I am able to ping all machines I have tested to, by IP address, and by hostname.

Starting a virtual XP session within Windows 7, I am able to browse to the shares in the XP session.

In the network section, no PCs are visible excluding the local PC. Attempting to browse to the local PC via the network results in the error message "The specified network provider name is invalid".

All PCs are in the workgroup "WORKGROUP"

Browsing around the network via my laptop functions with no issues.

Browsing the the windows 7 PC from other pcs works without issue.

Any suggestions would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you in advance.

Try disabling IPv6.
And also, go to Device Manager and in the properties of your wireless adapter (assuming that you're using a wireless connection) and untick "Allow windows to turn off this device to save power".
Oh one other thing, try disabling homegroup.

Tried all of the above, as well as restaring all machines in question. I have resolved this now by doing a system restore to a point when it was previously working. Still no clue as to what the cause/fix was, but I could not afford the impact any longer due to work which needed to be completed.

I recently encountered something similar.
I managed to find out that the problem was with "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks". I went to the properties dialog of my connection, uninstall that service. After that, I clicked on install and selected service and reinstalled the same service. After restarting the computer, I was able to access my network folders.
Hope you are able to solve your problem too!
