Solved Win 7 Very Slow to Shutdown

I've been having a problem the past couple of weeks where my PC either takes forever to shutdown, or will not shut down at all. It just hangs on the "Shutting down" screen and the disk light blinks every second or so.

I eventually get tired of this behavior and press the power button. (I know - Bad Mellon! Bad!)

I should note that it will reboot properly, no lag shutting down.

I've run scans with MBAM, MSE and SuperAntiSyware with no results. I've checked the event log, and there is nothing much I can find there except for Kernel power events saying that the computer shut down unexpectedly (but that was me).

Problem is, I'm a little confused and don't know where else to look. Anybody have any ideas? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If it was my computer the first thing I would check is "msconfig/Startup/non Microsoft Services".

See if you have things running that don't need to be running.
It sound like Windows 7 is trying to shut down something running and can't.

Please note:
If you use Ccleaner, TFC , Disk Clean or other such programs before shutting down it could take a little longer. It all depends on what is being cleaned. Some times my computer will take a 2 or 3 minutes extra when using these programs before shut down. When things are back to normal it's a 5 second shut down.

If you could post a picture using the forms tutorial of Msconfig/Startup/ non Microsoft Services it might help.

Mine is taking 20 seconds. Linux shuts down in 2 seconds.
I've opened a treat Why it takes so long to shut down? and David suggested some links to be able to log the shut down (Post 4).

It won't fix the issue but will probably shut down your machine faster if you look here:

Shut Down -Speed Up

Option 2 all steps including those linked in Option 2 Step 5

My settings:

WaitToKillServiceTimeout 1500
HungAppTimeout 12000
WaitToKillAppTimeout 1000
AutoEndTasks 1

Reboot to apply changes. Next time you shutdown - if faster then it's pretty obvious that it's a problem with an app, service or process. How to tell which one? I don't know.

Hello mate my two cents worth I would untick all the start up tab items - I do

One scanner I sometimes use if SAS and MBAM are non productive is this
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found.
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)

I would suggest start by using this tutorial by Brink and see if you can isolate a problem. This might help you find the trouble and fix things before they get worse.

I would also suggest their are to many unneeded programs and non Microsoft Services on startup.
You system may need a few more but not many.

Well. after I fiddled around with some trace logs and did a clean start up, it turned out toe be the MB3 service from MalwareBytes Anti Ransomware. Once I got rid of that it boots and shuts down like a charm.

Yep pleased it is solved mate - it just strikes me that there are some really weird "situations" out there with stuff we use in all faith from the manufacturers.

For example in a nutshell my main desktop lost all USB ports and that was caused by the Samsung Magician SSD software - took it out and back they came

Yup. I used clean startup and just started adding things back in until it broke. That was after I looked at the trace log and it showed that MB3 was taking a long time to shut down.

It's really weird that MalwareBytes would do that. It must have been a behind the scenes update, because I've used AntiRansomware for ages with no problems, then just suddenly, out of the blue, this happens. Oh well it's fixed now. Shuts down in three seconds.

You could of caught Malwarebytes or any other program that is set to auto update during your shut down.
I personally don't have anything that auto updates.

It seems several people are having a slow shutdown problem with MalwareBytes Anti Ransomware.

Hmmm. Seems like I'm not the only one. I hope MalwareBytes can get this fixed soon. The product is wonderful and I'm enjoying doing the beta test.
