I reinstalled win 7end of story
Somehow, I thought it might be!
Thanks for all the feedback though, very interesting.
Troubleshooting this stuff is all very well, and if you absolutely have to for some reason, but usually, once I notice that something has mucked with a system I reinstall it.
Make sure you use a good anti-malware!
