I can't seem to keep my desktop icons from refreshing on EVERY bootup. I tried all the reg hacks for Max Cached Icons such as

Windows 7 - Increase Icon Cache Size | MyTechSupport.ca

It's not a big deal, I don't think this should be happening.

I use Dexpot, a multi desktop manager, but I don't think it's causing this.

Hi.

Dexpot i never heard of till now. Does run at startup?

May be a conflict somewhere. I saw one comment about misaligned icons on another forum.

cheers

y'ever notice, when they have no answer, they ask for your system specs.

Try to tick box in folder options "Always show icons, never miniatures"
This might help! or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer add "Max Cached Icons" at value 4096. One of these options solved issue for me.

Sorry I missed this the last time around.

To have desktop icons maintain their position rightclick a blank area of the desktop to Refresh.

As a self proclaimed wizened user you should know why hardware configs are helpful. :rolleyes:

I'm experiencing this exact same problem as well. This is after a fresh install of Win7 x64 Ultimate on my laptop and installing all my programs. Can anyone help me here?

Thanks.

Hopefully you're hewing pretty close to these steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

I gave the fix just above to force desktop icons to maintain their position once they're where you want them.

I'm not having problems with the position of the icons actually. I'm having problem when, upon startup, they refresh once and then back to normal. What could be the solution to this?

The problem has nothing to do with the IconCache.db rebuild or resize.
After a little work with the Windows 7 services the result is as follows:

If you do not use the Home Group you can disable the following services (after saving: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services):

Go to: System Services (services.msc);
search for: Computer Browser and DISABLE it;
search: Server and DISABLE it.

That's All folks!
Enjoy!

At my system (W7pro-64bit) when I uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" in the folder options, then two grayed out "desktop.ini" icons appear on the desktop (1 from user, 1 from all users). Then after every reboot all desktop icons are refreshed. Probably a system bug that will issue a refresh when 2 icons with the same name appear on the desktop. After recheck the "Hide protected operating system files" in the folder options the refresh after every boot disappears.
