Help! Trying to fix Win 7 on hand me down Sony Vaio!

A friend of mine recently received a Win 7 Sony Vaio from his brother in law that was password protected and has tasked me to fix his stupidity. Last week he asked me what to do to get into it and I told him that it would need to be rest no matter what if he wanted to make it his to remove the BIL's fingerprints and upgrade it if it was possible to do do so.He agreed and we start the process! Of course when do you ever see a man sit still for more than 5 seconds unless they are 1 lazy or 2 asleep? Well we had it doing its thing when ADD and OCD kicked in and he just had to have something behind me! He kicks the laptop off in the floor in mid reset causing to close. Well stupidity on my part, thinking here it was on the last cycle it should boot and everything would be right in this world again, WRONG! I tried to reboot after I see everything had stopped all together and figured it open correctly, WRONG! I received the safety screen ask if I want safe mode or normal boot. I have tried everything I can possibly think of trying to locate repair and restore software to correct it . I am creating a recovery thumb drive now for the second time after trying to boot with a WIN 10 upgrade. Am I correct in what I am doing? Will someone please help me, permission to slap me and tell me no stupid you are not, you must do this or don't do that. TYVMIA!

You should be able to boot 10 from a free iso https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
You dont give specs of sony if its low on specs it may not take 10
Most are ok but there are different models
