Well, okay, I installed XP today and my Win 7 has just disappeared. So, I tried the EasyBCD thing and the program displays both Win 7 and XP but my laptop still jumps straight into Win XP. I am complete newbie in this field and have very important files in my Win 7 Documents which I can't access through XP as it says "access denied". Any help to solve this will be appreciated. Thanks.

Put your Windows 7 installation DVD into your DVD drive and restart your computer from it. Look for the option to repair your Windows 7 installation.

Hi vgss4eva,

First, please fill out your System Specs as completely as possible so we can better assist you.

Now go to the Start menu search field, type "msconfig" and press Enter. Switch to the Boot tab, select Windows 7, click "Set as default" and click OK. This will make your computer boot into Windows 7 instead each time you restart.

Cheers,

Use EasyBCD 2.0 beta after doing quick registration for their forum to use beta.

You'll need to install Net Framework 2.0 to use Easy in XP. Then remove Win7 listing in Add/Remove and add it back, Save, Restart.

If this fails, make sure Win7 is marked Active in Disk Mgmt, boot the Win7 DVD Repair Console or Repair CD, click through to recovery tools list to Run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots to start Win7. Then install EasyBCD 2.0 beta in Win7 as it works better, remove then add XP, accept offered boot files, autocompletes, Save, Restart.

If this fails, post back a screenshot of your full Disk Mgmt drive map and Easy listings, using Snipping Tool in Start Menu, attach file using paper clip in Reply Box.

Thanks a lot guys. The beta version fixed it!!!! This forum is really a gold mine for newbies like me. Thanks again!!

In addition to Baarod's post. Windows 7 has a different boot configuration to XP. XP will always overwrite it because when XP was released, it didn't know to check for the Windows 7 type of configuration. So the golden rule (with Windows products) is to install the latest operating system last when configuring dual (or more) boot Microsoft OS' on the same system.
