Win XP for Win 7

Hi,

My daughter's netbook came with win7 but, is deadly slow even with 2GB RAM.
Can I replace 7 with XP?. .........thanx .........nick

The netbook was bought from PCWorld with win7 preinstalled, no CD.

Hello Nichos,

Probably not since you most likely will not have any XP drivers available for the netbook. You'll have to check the manufacturer's website to see if by chance they may have XP drivers available for your specific netbook model number. I wouldn't count on it though.

Have you tried a clean install of Windows 7?

Nichos, welcome to the windows 7 forums.
Most likely, the manufacturer of the netbook put a lot of programs on it in the hopes that you will pay for the trial versions for which the manufacturer normally gets a commission.

What you have to do is to clean the machine up which some call "decrapify" which describes much of the garbage that they include on new machines.

One way is to see what is running at startup of your computer.
you can type msconfig in the search window of the blue marble at the left end of the task bar.

run it and take a look at the "startup" tab to see what is starting with your computer.
you can un-check many things but you have to restart your computer after you apply your changes.

Thanx all,

Win 7 is heavy for a netbook judging from my Acer XP with 2GB.

I put my desktop's XPhome on a USB stick & worked OK on the Acer with no problems on drivers.

Do you mean Chipset, Lan, Audio etc drivers may not be available for HPs ?

HP most likely will not create drivers for the netbook for windows xp.
But it won't hurt to check the hp site with the make and model of your
netbook. But don't hold your breath.. :huh:

I can't say offhand why the netbook is deadly slow, as others have suggested it may be due to malware, virus or simply too many items being loaded at startup. I can say that I didn't see any appreciable difference in performance when I installed Win 7 on 3 netbooks in our household that originally came with XP. These are a little older (Acer Aspire One) and the RAM maxes out at 1.5G but the performance under Win 7 is perfectly adequate.
