Hey there,
I have a toshiba qosmio 505-884 came with windows 7 x64 home preme and I wanted to re-install my copy of win xp x64 with a dual boot.

I had an extra flash USB drive laying around so I used wintoflash to install windows xp onto the usb, booted from the usb after a fresh reset - boot menu popped up, selected to install win xp > loaded drivers and such > only HDD to select was on the USB couldn't select my formatted/partioned on my normal HDD that is on the laptop.

Am I overlooking something? I have EasyBCD all set up and ready to go after I boot into windows, I also used the nLink on the CD so that I could use my SATA HDD...

Thanks for the help in advance,

Ki.

p.s I had a windows xp running on my dual boot and ran EasyBCD and created a bootmbr and then my xp wouldn't boot at all so I formatted the partion (15gb) and was hoping to re-do that, but can't seem to get past Windows setup only seeing USB.

First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware on the manufacturer's web site.

If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.

Well I do not have a flobby drive as I have a laptop. Also with the SATA HDD links, I already have done it with nLink, slipstreaming the SATA HDD

I'm just wondering why my installer only sees USB drive and not my HDD with the formatted Partition on it. (it was a RAW, now its NTFS)

1) Install with no USB drives pluged in.

2) If you have slipstreaming the SATA HDD drivers they are not needed, SATA Controller drivers are needed.

Did you slipstream the SATA Controller drivers, & not the SATA HDD drivers?

How would I make sure that I am indeed using the SATA controller Drivers and not the HDD Drives? When the Xp setup is loading (text) do I push f6? and go from there?

What drivers did you slipstream or on floppy?

I'm not sure, I made a back up .iso of my win xp, than I lost the CD. That's why I'm not using a floppy/cd. I will however, burn the CD again if that would solve the problem. Just wanted to see if I can use the USB to install.

You can install Win XP from USB, but is very, very, hit & miss.

Best to install from CD.

Though those post could be helpful, just not in my case. I am attempting an Install of windows XP in my Windows 7 as a dual boot. ATM I have tried the USB method, in which when I get to the XP setup in the BIOS, windows setup only recognizes the USB as the only HDD. Next attempt I've read that you can open the .iso with software like PowerISO, and copy over all the files on to the partion you wish to install windows xp to.

So I opened my PowerISO and saw all the files on the .iso > Moved all the files to my NTFS formatted E:\ Partion > ran the setup > setup GUI pops open, the install button is greyed out and unclickable.

Does this method not work? or am I missing something else here?

What Sata Controller drivers are using?

I'm using the correct ones for my HDD, and the Partition thing didn't work. The thing is I do not possess the actual CD, only the .iso and cd-key from my previous CPU I built. Next step is back up my portable HDD (500gb) - install like I would be to a normal flash drive, then boot into USB and install there, then I do not need to partition my HDD, and all I have to do is boot via USB when I need XP.

I'll post results later tonight..

Theog - Thanks for all your help. Reason I know I'm using the correct drivers is cause before I got the dual boot to work, but accidentally then I used EasyBCD and erased my MBR on the XP, which was good for me cause I couldn't

Since your not telling me how to find these sata controller drivers, what I have done is I copyed the whole CD onto the partition I want to use, ran the setup > no go. So I went into I386 folder, and BAM installer working.. Amazing :D

Similar issue - booting XP as a second operating system with Win 7 Pro already installed. But different because I have the XP system disk from my old computer and just want to move it to the new one. I have had it with virtual XP, just too many things it will not do that XP will. THe XP disk is sata 2 as is my new computer. So, do I just put the XP disk in an empty drive bay and call it done? Pretty sure that a lot of new drivers need to be installed, not sure the Win 7 machine will even recognize the second drive as bootable, etc.

My apologies if this has elsewhere been discussed - searched a lot before posting.

This site has solved every problem I have encountered and I hope that is the case once again.

Thanks a lot for you help.

To move XP to new hardware you'll normally need to run a Repair Install from boot to acclimate it to the new hardware, remove SID and activation: XP Repair Install - Part 1 of 2

If after going through the steps as if it install it does not show an installation to Repair, you'll need to either SysPrep XP HD on the old hardware, or use Paragon Adaptive Restore CD to remove drivers, SID and activation on the new hardware.

Be sure to unplug the Win7 HD during these operations. After install, plug back in Win7, set it first to boot in BIOS setup, then to boot XP when needed use the HP F12 one-time BIOS Boot menu key.
