Hi everyone,
New to the forum, but long time Windows user. I have Windows 7 Pro 64 bits SP1 installed.

Here's the deal. My system crashed overnight (no one knows why). When it boots back up, it works fine for a while and then Freezes (no more mouse mouvement, no more num-lock light switching on/off). Windows Event is of course empty.

I was able to figure out where the source of the problem is. Seems that the whole Restore Point thing is corrupted. Including the Auto part where once in a while it creates a back-up point during boot up.

I have tried in normal mode:
1 - Accesing the restore to a previous point through Windows normal mode: Freezes every single time when i hit the configure button to remove the Restore point from my C:\ Drive.
2 - Accessing it through CCLeaner and trying to remove a single Restore Point: Freezes.
3 - Accessing it through Disk Cleaner, Delete all the restore points. It works... but never ever delete anything.

I have tried in Safe Mode:
1 - Accessing the Security Protection tab: no succes :( It doesn't show in the tab
2 - Accessing the DiskCleaner, Delete all the restore points: Error 1084, not working in safe mode.
3 - Deleting the restore points using CCleaner, Error 1084 not working in safe mode.

I have scan the PC in safe mode with Eset node32, Malwarebytes and Spybot and all is good.

so in short: My whole Restore and Restore Auto-Creation point is completly corrupted and i'm looking for a way to fix that! Either using the registry or anything else. Anyone has an idea? No i did not instal software lately (it's been 2 monthes), no i did not change any hardware for the past 2 years.

thanks eveyrone!

Welcome

Lets start with a repair for corrupted files by following steps on:
:ar: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
If it finds corrupted files for repair, it will ask you to reboot. Repeat the same process 2 more times.

Uninstall Eset+Spybot and install MSE, select your version from here:
:ar: Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows
PS. Run a full scan after installing it.

For full analysis we need the dumps that are created by your computer after a blue screen of death. Upload them following:
:ar: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

Will be waiting for your next post

Hi KoolKat,
thanks for you answer:

1 - The Scan has been ran multiple time without any error to report (done from SafeMode).
2 - I was able to activate the Add/Remove software option using a regedit modification and Eset and SpyBot are now uninstall. Unfortunatly, i can't install/run MSE since it doesn't want to install from SafeMode. I tried it from Normal Windows but since i can't get my PC to run more then 1 or 2 minutes before crashing, it did not install.
3 - Since it does not create a BSOD, i don't know if you'll get the information you need. I will crash my PC, then log back in safe mode and run it. I will attach the .zip in the next minutes.

thanks again.

Dale,
All possibilities are not good news.

such total disasters do not occur out of the thin air.

If you happen to recall something else you would like to relate, that would be helpful.

Highest priority: Backup all data dear to your heart.

Backup the data to an external usb drive. You can get one of sufficient size for $50 US.

After you have backed up all data dear to your heart let me know:
a) how much data (in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes) was backed up

Hi Karlsnooks,
The action that i did previous to the crash was a simple DVD Shrink backup of my girl's new TinkerBell DVD.
Then i left with everything working, to come back to a frozen screen. I came back the next day but the time on the frozen screen was roughly 19h15, about 1h after the DVD backup.

I still have plenty of disk space and as i said, SafeMode works flawlesly! I'll try to delete some stuff and take backups but i still think since it seems to be OS related that it's fixable!
Thanks in advance guys!

You did say you uninstalled Spybot, did you reinstall it? In another thread it was at fault, leave it off of w7.

Spybot was uninstalled as was everything else without any Succes.
I backed up everything and :( Fresh install!
Now running like a charm! Corrupted Windows that's for sure!
But was it because of a Tookit/Malware/Spyware/Virus? I don't know! Couldn't figure it out...

Good to hear you have your system back anyway.:D

Be sure to install some good, paid for, security. Not AVG or McAfee.

  1. run msconfig
  2. disable all (non windows) services
  3. restart

works for me (blue screen while creating restore point).
