I just recently tried to setup Outlook 2003 as a backup e-mail device.

I have never used it before and don't want to use it as my primary e-mail. I don't like it at all. The problem is that when I select Inbox I get thousands of new and old mail. Are these messages saved on my computer or only on the ATT server. Is there a way to only save today's e-mail and not all e-mails.

Thanks, Bob.

If you are using the same internet provider for Outlook 2003, then Outlook will download all the old emails that are stored on the internet providers website. This is normal as the new email application will be considered as a new service.

If you no longer need these emails you could access you email providers website & delete them directly from there & they will not show up again.

Thanks. Do the e-mails get saved on my computer? If they are only saved on my ISP I don't care. On my other e-mail program (Seamonkey) only the new messages are saved. My pst file is huge.

The Outlook .pst file will be large if all those downloaded emails have been saved onto your computer. Your ISP will usually also have these same emails stored on their website unless you have actually deleted them, or you have set your email account settings to delete emails after a set period of time.

This website explains how to reduce the size of those files.

Is there any way to stop Outlook from saving any e-mail on my computer? What is the best way to stop outlook 2003 and to eliminate and cleanout any leftovers. I did not, and do not, like it at all. I'll stick with my Seamonkey system which is 100% better.

Bob.

OK. Thanks. So I'll uninstall Outlook and delete all those files. That should delete it all. Bob.

Before you delete the files, keep this in mind: If Outlook was set up as POP3 when it downloaded your email, then those downloaded emails are the only copy of those emails that you have. In other words, if you delete them from your computer, they are gone forever.

The only possible exception to this is if Outlook was set to keep downloaded emails on the server for a given amount of time. Typically, this is set to five days. If this is the case with your copy of Outlook, then emails downloaded within the past five days will still be available for that limited amount of time only on the server (for example, if you check your email via webmail). Once five days (or however many it is set to) is reached for an email, it disappears forever. If no retention time was set, then they are deleted from the server as soon as they are downloaded, meaning that the only copy will be on your computer.

If you save your PST files to another location (say, to your backup drive) and then delete the PST files from your computer, then at a future date you will be able to recover emails out of them.
