My Vaio SZ came with Vista Business and of course became quite sluggish. So a few month back clean installed Win7 (Not supported by Sony) and followed the driver guides on here. However I am already finding it just as sluggish and is also now completely freezing at times.

Tha laptop has 2Gb RAM and I'm now wondering whether XP will be the best solution and run much quicker?

Thanks in advance.

(I have a 4Gb desktop that will run Win7 on where I guess it will work better?)

Officially, you have enough ram, 2gb, but its really just the minimum. No one can tell you what to do. On one hand you have the opportunity to use the newest and best OS, win7, but with just the bare minimum ram. Its going to be slow, and freeze at times and may have other problems. On the other hand you have XP, which is on the way out. and by 2014, it will be just about dead. Websites, business, programs and applications will not be XP oriented. In 2014, there will not even be security patches for XP.

You have the facts its your call. You will have one computer with Win 7. You could keep XP on the Lappy, and use it until XP is just a memory, which would be the solution for me.
Best of luck to you

You can try a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?l to see if it might correct a bad install.

Sounds like you might have futzed with the drivers too much. The Win7 installer is driver-complete, even updating drivers during install if you stay connected to internet, then newer ones arrive via Windows Updates.

MS sponsored the partnership wtih all manufacturers to build Win7 drivers, so they have them first since they paid the bill. Only drivers missing in Device Manager need to be hunted.

You might be happier with 32 bit on that machine, as I am on my 2 gb p.c.

If you need to buy the xp, i dont recommed you do that. Just disable Win Aero by going to to right click desktop -> personalize -> choose a high contrast theme. You should see improvement.
