Solved Win7 cannot write crash dump?

Hi guys,

I'm experiencing lots of BSoDs  when the Wi-Fi connection is heavily loaded. I saw NETIO.SYS stated on many BSoDs, but nothing more specific.

I got one ASUS RT10-N set up as an access point and switch. The laptop is connected via 150Mbps 802.11n Wi-Fi link (one static IP) and my desktop box is connected via 100Mbps Cat.5e UTP cable (a good one, though) to the same router.
The box is with another static IP (from the same network).

Well, I went through the standard procedure to analyze the crash dump with WinDbg, but here comes one of the surprises. To be specific - there's no crash dump!!!
I tried various directories and what not, alas no crash dump! I also tried the option with no restart, still nothing.
Only once I managed to record ~500MB memory dump, which I cannot get rid of. 'You have no permission to open this file', OMG! I'm logged as admin.

So, first - how to record the crash dump (or why Win does not)?

Sorry for the mixed up bloat, but I'm kind of frustrated and can't get my mind to one piece right now.:mad2:

Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Here you go !!
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
In the Write debugging information list, click Small memory dump (64k).

To change the folder location for the small memory dump files, type a new path in the Dump File box (or in the Small dump directory box, depending on your version of Windows).

Hi Tews,

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I did exactly as you say but no crash dump after the restart.
I'm aware of how to enable crash dumping (sorry if I sounded the other way). The desktop is with XP and I got all the crash dumps from the beautifully blue SoDs. ;) It just won't happen in Win7.

BTW, under 'Write Debugging Information' I got (none), Small memory dump (256KB) and Kernel Memory Dump. The last one is about 500MB and I cannot open it.

In addition to Tom's advise, make sure that you are not using any program such as CCleaner, because they may clean out the minidump folder:)

How do I know if I'm using CCleaner? Could it be installed with something else, without my knowledge?

I'm using ZoneAlarm, NOD32 and TuneUp Utilities. For the former I'm quite sure it doesn't wipe anything automatically.

10x for the tip, anyway!

Go to Control Panel-->Program and Feature and look for if you are using CCleaner. If you don't know what it is or never used it and see it in the program and feature, you can uninstall it. It is a type of program that wipe out things like minidump

Yay!

I got it. I just changed the dump path to C:\ and voila! Seems Win7 doesn't create directories that don't exist. So I just put c:\ and now I got a juicy 248KB dump, which I'll submit in few moments in a new thread.

One more thing, I had to ran Windbg as admin in order to load the file. It displays ownership permission required, even though I had one.

Good job, guys! Thanks!
