Solved Win7 freezes when deleting a file

Hi everyone, I have an ASUS laptop that I bought brand new about a year ago. I haven't had any trouble with it until a couple of weeks ago. While I was on vacation last month I brought this laptop along and just occasionally checked my email with it. I noticed about a week and a half ago that it would start freezing any time a file is deleted.

It freezes up for about 30 seconds. The cursor can be moved around on the screen, but nothing can be clicked on. If I do click on stuff while it is frozen, it will suddenly try to catch up with all of the clicking that I made once unfrozen (if that makes any sense).

This only happens when deleting files. At the suggestion of one person I tried an alternate file manager, Xplorer2, but had the same results. Aside from Xplorer2, I have not made any system changes.

However, Windows downloaded and installed about 30 updates during the two weeks I was on vacation. Most of them applied to Office 2007. I am currently working on uninstalling a few at a time and then restarting my system to see if that fixes the problem. I've done about 15-20 updates with no luck so far.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I would check if your disk is fragmented.

Go to My computer, Right click Windows install drive ( c: ) go to properties, go to tools tab, click defragment now.

This will bring up a new dialog box. where you can select the drive to defragment or analyze

My disk was 1.2% fragmented, so I don't think that was the problem. I went ahead and ran the defrag anyway. I've also uninstalled all of the Windows updates (from September since that's when I started having trouble) and I'm still having problems. So, I really am not too sure what else to do now.

Your hard disk could be failing. Does your Computer have any S.M.A.R.T features?

Hard disk failure would suck with the computer only being a year old! SMART features? I don't know, it doesn't strike me as the most intelligent laptop, but that probably doesn't answer your question. I'm not sure what SMART features are.

Crystal Disk Info Is a great tool to see if your drive is failing, download and install then just run the program it should tell you right away the status. post a picture of the output afterwards.

You can also try running the system file checker to see if any system files require repair.

1. Click Start
orb.png

2. In the search box, type cmd
3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator
4. In the command window that opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Report the output once it finishes.

Golden: I ran the system file checker using the directions given (thanks a bunch, never would have found it otherwise!)

Results: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I'm trying to avoid reformatting/reinstalling Windows since it seems that would be like trying to kill a spider with a shot gun. Plus, I'm not totally sure that would fix the problem. So, let me know if you all have any other suggestions. I appreciate your help.

Hi,

Run Crystal Disk Info again, but take a screen capture of the screen instead and post it here.

Also download and install SeaTools for Windows, from this site (follow the instructions to install). You might be prompted to install Microsoft .NET Framework 4, and directed to the Microsoft download page. Cancel the SeaTools installation, download and install the .NET, and then install SeaTools.

Run SeaTools. Click Accept in the blank conditions box, and from the main interface, select your drive, and then from the Basic Tests run:

  • SMART Test

  • Short Drive Self Test

  • Short Generic
Capture.PNG
If these pass, then I do not think there is a problem with the disk itself, and we can then look at other issues to correct the problem/

Golden

Hi,

To be honest, that drive looks in perfect shape - I don't see any problems.

What sort of files are you deleting, when the freezing occurs?

Regards,
Golden

Hi Golden, the freeze-up occurs any time I delete anything. Whether I delete a 1KB text file or a 3MB jpg, and it seems to occur at any location: whether it is deleted from the desktop or from some obscure folder in the D Drive, which is the data partition.

I can cut and paste files without a problem, unless I try to paste them into the recycle bin.

Did you try the surface test too? I had a clean test with Seatools on one and the surface test came up with some bad sectors so worth a try!
