ICit2lol, I'll give the surface test a try when I get a chance and post the results here.

ICit2lol, I ran scandisk a couple of times through Windows7 and a utility that I have, scanning both partitions of the hard drive. I'm not aware of any errors that were found and I'm still having trouble. Let me know if you have any other ideas. Thank you for your help.

To help see whats actually going on when you're deleting files run the problem step recorder. Run through everything that you're doing when you delete the file. Then attach the zip file to the forum by clicking on the paperclip.

How to Use Problem Steps Recorder in Windows 7

After you do that go into event viewer, and take a screenshot or snippet of the output.

Click Start orb.
In Search box type in Event Viewer Press enter.
Once Event viewer opens on the left column click windows logs, then click system.
If any errors are occurring when you're tying to delete a file they will show up.

Make sure you view event viewer right after you delete the file.

Upload both the Screenshot and the zip file created.

Now I don't know candora but am wondering if this happens in safe mode?

Also am wondering if you have run any "Cleaner / Tune up" apps just lately?

Um I have also just noticed that Xplorer 2 app you say you added. Now a Google comes up with it is a file management system - maybe just maybe that is the problem??

parman - I can give that a try. Obviously I won't be able to stop the recorder once I delete a file since the computer freezes up for 30-60 seconds, which is what the issue is. Does that Problem Steps Recorder generate some kind of system log, or is it only screen shots? If it is only screen shots then the only thing it will record is once I have confirmed I want to delete/send something to the recycle bin it will show the cursor turning into a little blue circle that spins for about a minute while I wait for my computer to start responding again. No error messages or dialogues pop up.

ICit2lol - I haven't tried this in safe mode, I'll have to look up how to reboot the laptop into safe mode since I haven't done that with Win7 before. It's worth a shot.

I do have TuneUp Utilities 2012 on my computer, and it runs periodically. Once this started happening I ran pretty much every scan and defragmenter that it has.

In regards to the last question: yes, that was my initial thought. I'm not very tech savvy anymore, but from what I gathered in a Google search the problem sounded like a Windows file management system error/problem. But, even using a different program to manage and delete my files outside of Explorer didn't seem to make any difference. So, I have since uninstalled it (btw, uninstalling programs seems to operate normally, I just can't delete files).

keep the recorder running until the computer unfreezes. Then stop the recorder. Then go into your Event viewer and take a screen shot of that, from post 26 above. Post both the zip file report and the screen shot.

When the PC is booting before you see the windows screen press F8. Then just choose safe mode :D

Well, quick update: I booted it in safe mode and had absolutely no problems. So, I rebooted back in normal mode, confirmed I do still have problems, used TuneUp Utilities to disable every program that starts with the computer, and now have my computer in what I call "skinny mode" with pretty much everything disabled that I could disable (except the sound card drivers).

Now it is functioning normally. So, I'm thinking it is some program booting up with my computer that is causing issues. I guess now it is a matter of figuring out which one(s). I'll post the results once I figure out something.

Well, good news. I figured out which program has been causing all of this frustration, and it is the last program on the list I would have suspected: Stardock Objectdock.

I've been using that program ever since I got this computer without any trouble. I'm guessing something updated in the Windows7 system that now conflicts with Objectdock. But whatever the case, with Objectdock gone I can now delete files without my computer freezing up.

Thank you ICit2lol, parman, and golden for working with me on this for the past several days!

To do the safe mode do as parman says - I personally rhthmyically tap that key as opposed to holding it down but the choice is a personal one I guess I just like hearing the beep when it's starting that but candora my friend I really don't like those addon tune up apps as most of he Windows tools do the job. In fact things like defragging Windows will put back the files in the order it likes them and originally put them.
If you haven't got a SSD - just a straight hard disk drive (HDD) then it should be set to auto defrag at regular intervals so negating the need for you to do it. Having said that I used to use a small app called My Defrag which ran fast and then the Windows did it's run in a much quicker time.
I think if you check by default Windows in my experience does the auto defrag at some thing like 3am and if you don't keep the machines probably dosn't get done too often. Reset it for say 8am once a week.
OOps just saw your last post but my suggestions are there for you to use if you so wish - just be careful with those real sound good tune up apps and the one you found was the problem child they sound great but in all honesty wreck more than they fix IMHO - have fun and oh just try safe mode it's worth keeping in mind for the future - go in see what it is like and then restart.:D
One last thing try this this tutorial it will speed up your machine really good I use it on all mine and fixes.
