win7 login screen auto shutdown after 55 second. no BSOD

super strange, this problem has come back... faced it about 1.5 years ago, and it fixed itself... just ran the latest set of windows updates (4 total i think)... and now my computer keeps rebooting at the login screen... after exactly 55 seconds after i see my login wallpaper. i have disabled auto restart, but it doesn't obey it... i bypassed my battery backup for my HP desktop. didnt help
i ran the windowsPE repair, and the windows built in startup repair.
this happened awhile ago as i posted, but if i entered my password before the 55 seconds, i was good... i am now unable to enter it because windows is configuring the latest updates... please wait and then black screen, power off, and reboot (with no reboot error screen)

tried safe mode, same thing, tried last know good config, same

when i was able log in 1.5 years ago, i looked at my event viewer and said it was kernal power

Hi Pj,

Welcome to the 7forums :)

i looked at my event viewer and said it was kernal power
A kernel power event is the result of a shutdown that happens unexpected, unless someone is not aware of it the event is not informative.

i bypassed my battery backup for my HP desktop
What exactly does this mean?

Do you know what updates are attempted to be installed?

i bypassed my apc battery/surge protector...
i dont know the updates... i remember there were 4, and only important updates, not recommended.
when i try system restore, it is empty... i nkow i did sytem restores.. i think it is empty because i am in the middle of these updates... it ran though the updating process on shutdown, and now it is doing the final part of the update upon startup, but unable to because of this rebooting issue...

any ideas??
thanks
pj

I do have an idea, lets first see if we can find the updates :)
Please enter following command in a command prompt that you may find in the troubleshooting options
Code:
wmic qfe get hotfixid,installedon
It'll give a list of installed updates with their installation date, example from my Windows 10 system:
View attachment 390441
   Note
In case of question, I tested it on my Windows 7 VM

also, i thought maybe i would try booting from an old drive (cloned from that same PC last year, it was starting to fail... so i changed it out...) would that tell me something? hardware, versus software at least huh?
i can boot into bootdisks (ubuntu, winPE) allday long, never will shut down.

I would advice to not try it, it may cause more problems.

You can boot from them, because they use only the RAM.

sure, i will try your ideas first... but the HDD are exact clones, on the same machine with same hardware, i switched back and forth when i first did the clone (almost 1.5 years ago)... and there were no issues... but i will do as you say... and report back with my findings! thanks again so much for helping me out like this! i really appreciate it!

The problem is, I do not know if the hard drive failing is because the file system caused problems or if the problem was the hard drive itself. I do not want you to risk unnecessary problems.

special thanks to Christian Cawley!!!!

How To Fix A Windows 7 Infinite Reboot Loop
To open this, type C: and press Enter. Type DIR and press Enter to check that you are in the right drive – the contents listed should include the Program Files, Users and Windows folders.
muo-w7bootloop4.png

You will then need to change directory. Enter CD \windows\system32\config and then DIR to check that the correct files and folders are listed:

  • RegBack
  • DEFAULT
  • SAM
  • SECURITY
  • SOFTWARE
  • SYSTEM
With access to the correct directory and the required folders present, enter MD mybackup to create a backup folder. Enter copy *.* mybackup to copy everything to this location, agreeing to the overwrite warnings when they appear.
muo-w7bootloop7.png

The RegBack folder stores automatic Windows registry backups. To check if these can be used in restoring your system, enter CD RegBack and then DIR to view the contents. In the folder, you should have the following:

  • DEFAULT, SAM and SECURITY files, each around 262,000 bytes
  • SOFTWARE file, around 26,000,000 bytes
  • SYSTEM file, around 9,900,000 bytes
Note that these figures are approximate, but recognise that if any of these files display a size of zero bytes then you will have to resort to another method of restoring Windows 7.
Running the Windows 7 Recovery

With your RegBack folder containing the data you need to restore Windows 7 and rescue it from the reboot loop, you will be able to copy the contents and use them to get the operating system back up and running again.
muo-w7bootloop8.png

Begin by entering copy *.* .. – note the two trailing dots. These indicate that the contents should be pasted to the level above – the Config folder. Agree to all prompts concerning whether you want to overwrite files, and once the process has completed enter exit to close the command prompt.

shooot, i wrote too soon! i thought i would try just restarting my pc.. and sure enough, same problem!! i did not install any new updates. i have it set for me to manually install updates, so it did not happen behind the scenes (that i know of!)... how do i clear my pending updates???
i think the problem was still there... it just didnt have any windows updates happening when i logged in, i was just presented with my user/pass, i entered my password quickly on got into windows fine... i think if i would have waited a minute, it would have turned off again.. is there a service that if fails, reboots the system?
i found a couple
CNG Key Isolation - restarts pc if service fails.. no option to uncheck

Encrypting File System (EFS) - restarts pc if service fails.. no option to uncheck

Security Accounts Manager - restarts pc if service fails.. no option to uncheck

i dont know what to do, i am on the pc right now... but if i shut it down, it will happen again!
help!

thanks

ok, tried updates (funny, only a .net update, even after i said search for new updates, only one showed up, saying it was published today) installed it, then installed the windows 7 readyness tool. no luck, when i powered down, it just said shutting down... then when powering back up, same message, configuring windows desktp or something like that, and then poof. reboot. some settings are sticking, like programs i have enabled, or disabled even after i copy back over my backed up reg files.. i find that odd...
look at my 2 screen shot attachments... said last install was in july, yet if i look at my history it says there are updates installed in august

guys, help me

How extensive can the HP diagnostics tests be run? Does it only perform a few tests or can you continue with more tests?

I'd like to know how extensive, or better I'd like to know what HP does in the test to determine how reliable these tests are.

Asking, because I'm unfamiliair with the HP diagnostics.
