hi, i'm trying to run some ancient 16bit programs in virtualXP. the virtualXP sees the Win7 drives where all my data is stored. i can inspect the contents of those drives from virtualXP. virtualXP however has not allocated a drive letter to the Win7 drive so that i can access this data on the Win7. i need to be able to map Win7 C: drive as say Z: drive in virtualXP. any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

First Click Start> Computer.

Once done click on 'My Network Places'.

network places.PNG

Upon clicking you should see a share called 'tsclient'. Open that share and it should be your C:\ drive in Windows 7. Now copy the UNC path above.

copy UNC.PNG

Once copied, go back to 'My Computer' and click on 'Tools' > 'Map Network Drive'.

You should see a network mapping wizard. Here paste the UNC path in the 'Folder' text box and pick the drive letter you wish to map it to.

map to z.PNG

Now click Finish and your drive C:\ Drive should be mapped to Z:\ in Windows XP.

Hope This Helps,
Josh :)

I don't see how mapping a drive can give you write access to that drive.

Write access to drives on other machines typically requires that you make adjustments to the Security tab of the Windows 7 machine.

If adding a drive letter doesn't work> http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/92521-hdd-sharing.html#post798310

thanks josh. it's all working. i forgot about the mapping \\tsclient\C .i did do one on my main system a few years ago but must have had a senior moment in remembering. i now have it documented. as i would have said years ago 'your blood is worth bottling'. i still use an excellent contact management system written by an australian company 30 or more years ago. that company was bought out and now the product no longer exists. it has worked in all flavors of dos and windows up to Vista. Win7 was the problem. The XP emulation resolved that. i believe that Win8 has a circuitous route to also offering VirtualXP. if i was years younger i would look for or write a comparable product. thanks again.
