Downloaded the SP1 Update today from Microsoft and immediately installed it on my work system without any issues besides the 1hr 20 min. it took to complete. 64bit OS AMD Quad Processor.

However, I installed it on my home system this evening, same 64bit OS but Intel quad processor and during the reboot process I got the the black win7 start up screen and below the logo it started showing files being updated and then froze with fatal error C0190001 file 498 of 97524 (bfsvc.exe)

Let it sit for another 40 minutes or so and figured it was never going to budge from that screen it froze on so I did a hard reboot. And then tried system restore and even then I got a exception error and message that restore failed. After trying another time with the same result upon the re-boot I was surprised that my system booted normally and when I got to my desktop there was a message saying system restored! Whew.

Not sure what went wrong and just may eventually go the route of a new install with SP1 rolled in already.

My home system is also unable to successfully install the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (KB2285068) update either.

Never needed to boot into safe mode. After the hard boot i had the option screen to either Repair startup or boot normal. Choose the repair startup twice followed by a couple attempts at a system restore (both of which reported the restore failed) but I clicked the wrong dialogue box to try again and my computer went to reboot. I let it take its course and to my surprise it booted normal to my desktop pre SP-1.

If SP1 is a cumulative update of all past updates why would we want to install the SP1 at this point in time. I am only going to use it for new install so i do not have to download and install all the past updates.

SP1 also has hundreds of Hot Fixes that were not offered through updates but were only available through a manual download.

Why are you installing RC SP1 when RTM SP1 is available today???

Not sure what made you think I installed the RC of SP-1; I installed the final RTM version SP-1.

To answer lafargeotte question:

I did not try to install SP1 again since I o not feel I'll have any better luck the second time around and I'm waiting to see how others deal with this issue once SP1 is rolled out to the general public. I'm quite sure I will not be alone with this issue.

Here is a link with other links telling all about SP1 and its install me my self will only be using it for a clean install to get all the updates installed from the beginning and not have to go through installing all of the ones to date. I am going to switch the Laptop to an Intel SSD and install Windows 7 64 bit with SP1 Ultimate on the new SSD.

What's included in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Well decided to give SP1 installation another shot this evening and in the end it was successful though I received the same fatal error C0190001 when applying update 484 of 97612 (bfsvc.exe)

This time however I chose to go the f8 route after the hard reboot to boot into safe mode. The screen showed files loading and it froze for quite awhile but then rebooted on its own and proceeded to boot as normal. When I got to my desktop I had the dialogue box that confirmed SP1 was installed successfully. :D

Not exactly a graceful update but I got there.
