Win7 pro x64. I can create images and restore them using bootable media [DVD], however if I attempt to restore an image using the Backup and Restore option in Control Panel, Specifically -

Recover system settings or your computer>Advanced recovery methods>use a system image you created earlier to recover your computer

when the system attempts to boot I get the follwing message:

Windows failed to start ....etc
Status: 0xc0000225
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

The system suggests I use the Win7 install disk, which I allow to perform repairs. They do not work.
The recovery disk burned by Windows sees there is a problem and offers to fix. That does not work.

Have restored MBR per
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20864-mbr-restore-windows-7-master-boot-record.html

Suggestions?

TIA

Sorry for the long delay....

Another problem occurred, which is likely related, however I have no clue how. The install has been terminated - but the issue remains.

First, If I understand correctly, you are asking if C: is 100 Mb - presume you are asking about the reserved partition? [no partition letter]. C: is 100 Gb.
No, on this machine, due to the dreaded "no room for shadow copy" error, used Acronis to increase the size of the reserved partition. This obviously did not solve the basic issue, it simply extended the time till even that was too full for Backup to work. MS apparently fills any size you create with some sort of cruff....

The problem initially was noticed when the used space on the reserved partition suddenly jumped from about 30 Mb to about 70 Mb - preventing MS backup from running. We initially believed this may have been caused by bogus Intel USB 3.0 drivers which simply do not work with the Intel DH87MC motherboard. These drivers may also cause the boot error that started this thread. We don't know - neither does Intel support. They are apparently working on some fix - my report was evidently not the first. For now, we run with USB 2.0

Also, installing Acronis disk director or True Image similarly trashes the reserved partition, so we had to "sacrifice" a clean install to be able to produce bootable Acronis media that can be used for backup - then create a fresh install. [We do not install Acronis on the hard drive. Even those backup DVD's have issues on reboot, but that may not be a Win7 issue. Acronis is a work in progress, not ready for prime time imho]

Even though there was an MS backup made of a "clean" install having only 30 Mb used of the reserved partition - when that partition suddenly filled after reboot, attempting to restore the "clean" MS produced image [C+reserved] resulted in the same overfilled reserved. So having an MS backup does not save you....

The Acronis image of the same set restored a truly "clean" [sector by sector] image, with the reserved partition having only 30 Mb used. - possibly because Acronis also restores the boot portion of the disk [available in restore options].

So it would appear that the real issue is beyond the two basic partitions, and is somewhere in the Boot sector, MBR etc. The MS Backup likely does not save or restore this portion of the disk. Something is trashing that part of the drive and filling the reserved partition. *that* needs to be resolved. Have read stories about a USN journal and an fsutil fix, but that "fix" is simply hit and miss. Sometimes works, sometimes not.

Any input would be appreciated

What is the drive letter there of the 100MB system reserved partition? Or give me its partition number
What is the drive letter there of the 100GB partition (your win7 partition)?

Just to be clear as to what I wrote earlier - the earlier install was terminated - this is a new install that does not exhibit the same error code. This install boots normally from windows when you restore.

The reserved partition has no letter -
\\?\Volume{9D4ACF81-5657-11E3-BBB8-806E6F6E6963}\

You want me to make the Data partition [D:] Acitve?

It's bootable now? what do you want me to do... all problems you talked about are gone.

Normal in win7:

  • system reserved: no drive letter
  • win7 disk: Called C
normal if booting from dvd (winpe)

  • active partition (system reserved in your case) is called C
  • win7 partition is called D
