Hey guys... I get really randomly bluescreens - mostly if I try to ALT+TAB from games or if I try to exit them.

The last one occured after exiting a game named APB - All Points Bulletin.

I've already analyzed the last dump - hopefully you can help me figure out what's the exactly problem.

I'm getting random bluescreens ( got one 2mins ago while quitting Age of Conan... ) with 4 different versions of the graphics driver. Currently I'm using 10.7a.

Sorry for forgetting the required informations.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 - a System-Builder Version. I've tried it with 3 other versions too, I've formatted my system in the past 2 weeks about 5x.

The oldest part of my system is my SB which is about 1 1/2 yr old - any other component is completly new ( from x-mas till one week ).

Hi,

Run both a Memory Test . . .
Memtest - Instructions:

Download the ISO (or the .exe for USB drives) from here Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Then (if you have chosen the ISO) burn the ISO using IsoRecorder: ISO Recorder v3 Download (How to use IsoRecorder)

Boot from the CD/USB and run the test (at least 7 passes per test) with only one stick of RAM in place at a time.

It is a time consuming process but it is the only way to be sure it isn't a RAM fault.

For your final test, run the test with all the RAM in place.
. . . and a graphics stress test.

FurMark Setup:
Download from here: FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
- Click "Quit" to exit

Also . . .

Uninstall Daemon Tools

STPD.sys is known to cause BSODs; remove Daemon Tools, then use this SPTD installer to remove it (pick the uninstall option when you run the installer): DuplexSecure - Downloads

Update Networking Driver

I would have to agree with reventon that it is either a display driver issue, or an actual display hardware issue. The Canonical Display Driver (cdd) is responsible for blending GDI and DirectX calls, and then sending the pixel buffer data off to the video card to render. The fact that it is *always* in the same spot would indicate more a driver issue than a hardware issue, because the BitBltBitmap call is probably sending more data to the driver than it's capable of handling (that's my guess, given the failure point) - the application's paint handler is probably updating the whole pixel color buffer every time, rather than being intelligent and just updating the changed blits (no, that's not a typo). It *could* be a video hardware issue, as anything is technically possible, but the probability is low. If it doesn't fail when running, for example, the dxdiag tests, I'd say it's probably a driver issue handling the app's GDI code.

Thanks for the replys:

I've ran a memtest the whole night, it says 8 passes without any error.

The funny thing is it crashes without Daemon Tools too. ( anyway I removed it )

I've now updated the LAN-driver and will run now FurMark for a couple of hours.

My gunt instinct tells me ATi drivers are still broken or my new VGA is broken.... x_x

I've give you more informations in a few hours.

Thanks so far

Weird....

I have two displays and I wanted to watch "24" on one displays and let furmark run on the mainscreen. Furmark was running for a few seconds, I wanted to press play on the WMP and I instantly freezed, screen went black and my PC made a reboot.

Now, the same "way": First run FurMark, then WMP, everything is fine !? FurMark is now running for a few minutes, everything is so weird....

FurMark runs now for about 2hrs and 15mins without any problems...
Currently I was unable to reproduce the behaviour. My PC never crashed in a BSOD when running games or any other 3D-App, only when exiting them and Win7 tries to display the desktop - when changing from 3D to 2D.

EDiT:
I've exited FurMark, everything was fine, no problems at all.
Sometimes it works for a couple of days good, and sometimes I get 5 or 7 Bluescreens a day when I try to exit a game or ALT+TAB out.

Steam and Xfire.
Interesting is that the inGame-Overlays works fine but maybe the system is still crashing when detecting that the game isn't running anymore to deattach the overlay ?

I've also noticed that a game that isn't running in Steam ( StarCraft II ) crashed once or twice when quitting or ALT+TABbing - also some games that does not yet support overlays like ArmA II - Operation Arrowhead crashed when quitting ( last night it occured 3 times ).

I've already tried it without them but I'll test it again to be sure.

Steam holds my DirectX up to date I hope :) The last update was made while installing the Mafia II Demo which is a couple of days old.

Double check the DirectX just in case.

The overlays as the cause is the most plausible explanation here.

Hmmm..... that could be possible, although the likelihood is low (it's taking GDI data from win32k.sys, not DX data from dgxkrnl.sys). Definitely worth looking into though, just in case the fix is easy. The fact that it seems to always happen when switching back to a new 2D buffer would seem to indicate a GDI issue. Perhaps installing the latest DX runtimes from June after doing an sfc /scannow to make sure something isn't wrong with cdd.sys or win32k.sys?

Alright so far I did a update to the LAN-Driver, to the DirectX runtime and I've disabled the Steam Overlay... Sfc is still running.

Currently I could play now for about 2hrs without any problems - but sometimes it worked for a couple of days without any problems. So I need to test it the whole weekend to see if it's working fine now ( hopefully ) :)

I looked really good for the last 6hrs... but then I decided to play a bit Age of Conan and the computer instantly went off... no BSOD at all.

Hm, I hope it was a problem related to the Game... the BSODs are atm almost gone. I never had any BSOD again, hope it'll hold now for a long while ;)

I'm not sure if a repair-installation can help - I've reinstalled the OS for about 5 times now... o.o

Let's see what happen or will not happen :)

The BSODs seems to be fixed - but if I try to run a game for the first time my computer went instantly off when it's trying to load.

I've noticed if this happen my new SSD ( 5 days old ) disappears in BIOS and also in Windows. If I restart my computer again then it's again available.
The funny part is: Nothing runs on the SSD that is required while running the game...

Any ideas ?
It looks like my HDD-Controller is broken, isn't it =/ ?
