Win7codecs is an audio and video codec package for Windows 7. Use a good player and you don't need additional codecs. If you search a little you will find that adding these things causes more problems than they solve.

While that may be true, this is very handy for those who use Media Center (like me) to view ALL video files. I've been using the Shark007 codecs for a while now & so far they're the best out there IMO

With the latest x64 release, v202, I also support playback of standalone FLAC audio files in x64 Media Center and WMP. To enables this playback you must select the x64 WMP as the default player.


I rarely make troubleshooting posts outside of my own forums but was asked to make a post here because I have DTS mentioned in the current changelogs and a sevenforums member emailed me about this type of audio in an AVI container. DTS audio is an extremely difficult audio format on Windows 7 simply because Microsoft locks in thier codecs and doesnt give the user any obvious way around this. I have always been against hacking the system or changing windows installed filenames to achieve my goals.

If you have DTS audio in an AVI container, follow this proceedure for playback in WMP or MC;

Open the appropriate settings application . . .
use the 32bit application for a 32bit player, or the x64 application for MC on x64 systems
Change the AVI splitter under the AVI TAB to Gabests splitter
then rename the AVI to MP4
now your file will play.

what's the difference with k-lite mega codec pack? im using shark's vista codec pack in my vista. and i love it. is he the same author with this one? im annoyed with k-lite because of a lot of haali media splitter icons in the taskbar for each video in the playlist. im currently downloading this one. do they have the the complete codec?

Glad to see you made it here!

I'm going to throw my hat in the Win7Codec pack too, I've been using this pack since it's inception and I've used every other codec pack & player out there. Shark's pack is the Lightest, most complete pack of Vista and W7 compatible codecs in existence. And now that he's wrapped up a settings GUI for both versions, it's the easiest to configure (if needed) also. 90% of users will never need to touch those tho as the default settings work for all regular usage.
Stuff just plays in WMC and WMP with this pack and zero overhead.

I'm using the latest win7codecs and x64 addon. I'm having a problem getting any mkv container file that has flac audio to play in WMP x64. I get video but no audio. The same files play fine in MPC-HCx64 using ffdshow audio decoder. Any ideas or input is greatly appreciated.

APorter saught assistance on my forums....
he is now happily playing his mkv's containing flac in the x64 versions of WMP and MediaCenter.

This release will allow you full control of what H264 codec is used by the Microsoft Players
It will also give full MKV thumbnailing when selecting a codec other than Microsoft's
Uninstall/Reset All reverts any changes you have made and re-locks the Microsoft codecs.

I installed ZOOM player MAX, that included FFdshow and Haali for Matroska Splitter....

So far excellent player wit plenty of configuration options....

I don't want to overload the machine with things that I don't need/use...

I was holding back commenting here but it has to be said;

your 1st statement is that you are happy with your current playback
your 2nd statement is that you dont want to install something you do not need
....... so why ask if you should install more codecs when you feel you have it covered?

To install my codecs you would 1st need to ABANDON everything you have previously installed. Haali, Matoska splitter (isnt this Haali?) FFDshow, and probably Zoom player as well, unless you can block its internal codec instllation process. If it installed codecs, you're best uninstalling the player also. That in itself would be scary, but to each thier own. I am not familiar with Zoom player, so I could be completely wrong on that point.

My installations support ANY directshow player (not just 1 player) but I focus mainly on the native players, Windows Media Player and MediaCenter. I'm sure Zoom player can still be utilized using my codecs, but you'd 1st need to block its internal codec installation mechanism. (if it has this).

Installing my software will playback 90% of currently available video's using a default installation and no settings adjustments whatsoever. The obscure 10% not covered by default settings are easily handled with a simple tweak applied through the provided Settings Application. If an AVI fails to play, go into the Settings Application, click the AVI TAB, and choose a different splitter. Often choosing Gabest will play that odd AVI that failed innitially. Same settings adjustments apply to other popular formats, such as MKV etc.

Anyway, bottomline to my story....
If your current playback ability satisfies you, don't look elsewhere.
Fire up that 'singular player', and enjoy a video. It is already working for you.
